'Corrosion X' spray

WD-40 is generally not a good choice from my understanding; supposedly it attracts moisture over time?

Another product is called 'Salt Away'

WD-40 = Water Displacement formula #40.  But it is a poor lubricant and will trap dirt/sand.
+1 it will take away the grease.

Store it with the drag off.

I'm intrigued by this. What is the benefit of store with the drag loose?

Here's a quote from the god of reel maintenance Alan Tani:

"now, the problem with wd-40 or reel magic sprayed directly onto a reel, is that it penetrates into the drags. and then they stick. "

"Our tradition is that of the first man who sneaked away to the creek when the tribe did not really need fish."

So if I'm understanding right, don't spray Corrosion X directly on the reel. Spray it on a rag and wipe the reel down on the exterior?

That's how I understand it and what I do as well.

The drag thing...never knew but makes sense.

At an Alan Tani reel repair workshop he said, well to paraphrase, backing off the drags was necessary in the stone age of leather drag washers.  You're not gonna compress a carbon drag washer and keeping them buttoned down actually prevents salt corrosion and build up within the stack (cause a greased drag stack under tension isn't gonna allow a whole lotta water in between the washers).

The only thing that's gonna wear down your washers is friction, hopefully from big drag burning fish.

Makes sense to me so I stopped backing them off before rinsing.

thanks Ex kayaker, I have been in the habit of backing off the drags of my reels before cleaning, but I am going to stop on my newer ones now after being enlightened on it not being neccesary with carbon fiber discs.

I usually just spray mines down with water.. to you guys who use sprays like corrosionx, do you take it apart and them spray or just quickly spray certain parts of the reel..?

I just go out fishing, when I return I rinse the rods and reels, and sometimes my VHF and FishFinder if I took some water in the chest or something.  Everything else pretty much I just leave salty  :smt003

Lol, I once dropped a rod in Berryessa in about 20ft waters at night.. came back 4 days later and fished it out. Little Daiwa execeler stills works to this day.. but that's fresh water.. planning to get new reels in the near future so want to take care of them better lol

Corrosion X - spool bearings and roller bearings and exposed metal parts
Yamaha Marine Grease - drive bearings
Cals grease - drag and gears

In a massive surf wipeout water and sand will get inside your hull so I stow my reels in a dry bag for surf launch.

Yes.  Corrosion X and or WD 40 will also degrade your fishing line (mono).  Spray on rag, wipe all outside =metal parts, then wipe off excess with a clean rag.  Or in my case, the cleanest rag I have available......
