My name is Wesley Jones and I have been contacting the College Fishing Clubs/Teams in the Western Region to drum up interest in Collegiate Kayak Fishing Tournaments.

I am currently attending a Community College, in Northern California, and I have plans to transfer to a 4-year school this fall. When there I am wanting to start a Fishing Club (already in the works) and would like to get the club involved in as many events as possible, this and the others that are already available.

Upon some research and making some contacts there is Tournament Trail for Collegiate Kayak Tournaments that has been established, but they haven't been brought out here to the West Coast. So I am reaching out trying to make it happen. It is open to all College Students even if they are attending a Community College, aka 2-year. Unlike some of the other programs, this trail doesn't require any participation in a school club/team/organization. So if someone would like to participate and his or her school doesn't already have a team/club established that is fine. All he or she would need to do is find two other schoolmates to join them, which would make a team. Also the students only need to be enrolled in a SINGLE class, full-time enrollment is not required.

Now I understand that many of the individuals may not have Kayaks, that won't be a problem, because the organization along with the help with local dealers will have plenty available to those that cannot provide their own. Another cool thing about this Tournament Trail is that it doesn't restrict the number of participants from each school. If you have 15 members and they all want to fish, they can! If you have 30 members and they all want to participate, they can as well. The more the merrier. The idea is to expose as many people to the sport as possible. We only need 30 participants to hold an event. We tentatively have about 17 ready to participate.

Check them out, they are legit, with sponsors and everything!

Send me your questions, if you have any. I want to make this happen!

I will try to update this list frequently

Updates and other pertinent Information:
  • There is no age limit for qualifying.
  • There is no minimum requirement of units/hours/credits for participation.  You only need to be able to acquire a Student ID card
  • Grad School is ok
  • Each team will consist of Two (2) anglers.  Must have teammate to participate
  • Here is a link to the rules Note: these are subject to change

Sounds like you have good energy for the endeavor you've described - WTG!  I'm afraid the number of college students in NCKA is pretty low, but there are surely some members here who may want to get involved.

Come check out my tournament at Shelter Cove - The Ninth Annual Gimme Shelter Kayakfishing Tournament on May 16, 2015.  It's a long weekend festival and has been the largest kayakfishing event on the west coast for a couple years running.  Maybe you can intern...   :smt003

Your profile lists your location as United States.  It may be helpful if you narrow that down a bit.   :smt001

Even if the number is low, I'm hoping that there are parents or people on here that know kids that are attending school.

I would love all the help I can get, especially when it comes to spreading the word.

Ok.  I'm a student.  You got my attention.

Don't know many classmates, but I start looking/asking around.

Some of us old guys can qualify by taking Elder College at Chico State.  Was thinking about taking a class this spring session.  Inexpensive fee, no grade, can even cut classes for more important things, like fishing!  Maybe they even have a senior class in their tourneys.  I LIKE THE IDEA!!!!

I'll be 30 next month, so I know there isn't an age limit.  I'll have to check but I believe that in order to qualify as a student, the class(es) have to award hours/units/credits upon completion that would count towards a degree.

edit:  I am having this checked for accuracy.

PokerFishin you are no doubt aware that CSU Chico has a successful fishing team. They are on Facebook and might be another good place to network as well. Lots of luck I think it's great that you are persuing something you like so well.

I am well aware and have sent emails to those that I could find email addresses for, not just Chico, but all of the schools in CA that I could locate, I have also posted to all of the facebook pages I could track down as well.

Not all schools have teams/clubs, so I am hoping to reach out to as many as I can.  The other fishing programs/events limit the number of participants that each school can have.  College Kayak Fishing will include everyone that is wanting to participate.  Also there are community colleges with students that are not allowed to participate in those events, because they are not attending a 4-year school, College Kayak Fishing won't exclude them.  Plus full-time enrollment (12-units/hours/credits) is also required for those events, whereas College Kayak fishing does not require this.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.  This is an exciting opportunity and I am glad that College Kayak Fishing has asked me to help.

Thanks for checking on that issue.  Last year, being enrolled, I was given a student body card which allowed me access to the library, B-Line bus pass, access to sporting events and student discounts at businesses.  Wasn't a bad investment for the $50 fee.  Also, the GIS class that I took was a good refresher as things have changed in the 4 years since I got my GIS Certificate.  Hope it works for fishing!

Thanks again.

Bushy

Yes,  indeed it is.  I met Drew at the Headwaters booth at the ISE show.  He saw my enthusiasm, passion etc.  and wanted me to help out.

Drew is a great guy!!

From what I've seen and learned in the short time that I've talked with him, I would have to agree.
