More about CCK in Half Moon Bay...

Note: Good physical condition is required to ensure an enjoyable class. If you are not sure about your abilities to handle such an activity, please call our Program Office at 800-366-9804.

In this class you will learn the fundamental skills needed to paddle or pedal a fishing kayak safely and enjoyably. Upon arriving for the class, your instructor will outfit you with all the appropriate gear, including wetsuit, kayak, and other accessories. You will be given some on-land instruction on how to load your kayak, how to launch safely and proper posture while sitting and paddling or pedaling the kayak.

Once on the water, we spend the first two hours practicing efficient stroke technique and boat control, including the following strokes:

FORWARD and REVERSE Strokes
SWEEP Stroke (turn and adjust course)
DRAW Stroke (to move sideways)
BRACE Strokes (two methods to prevent capsizing)

During a lunch break on shore, there is a discussion of sea conditions as they affect the kayak angler, risk assessment and emergency procedures. Then, the fun part - getting wet! Back on the water, you will learn what to do in the event of falling off or capsizing your kayak, using assisted rescue and self-rescue techniques specifically designed for fishing kayaks. Everyone will be dressed for the water. It is extremely important that you know how to deal with a capsize in order to paddle and fish from a kayak on your own, or with friends, even in the calmest conditions. We'll teach you what to do! The following rescues will be taught:

SIDE-BY-SIDE RESCUE: This is an assisted rescue, where you help a partner get back onto his kayak.

SELF-RESCUE (STIRRUP & PADDLEFLOAT): These are self-rescue techniques, allowing you to climb back onto the kayak on your own.

If time allows after completing the rescues, the class may go for a short journey on the ocean. The Kayak Fishing Safety & Rescue class will give you the invaluable tools needed to significantly increase your enjoyment and safety whilst fishing from a kayak.

Thanks for the info.  I asked about the dates for that class just last weekend.
Are you going to be an instructor, James?
"Pedo Viejo" is what Antonio called me.

This looks like the class I was discussing with Sean back in November/December and trying to get together.  I'll cross post this to the other thread.  Thanks!

This doesn't look like an advanced kayak fishing safety class.  All of this was covered in the class at Timber Cove last year.

True, but perhaps a bit more in line with what some of the other folks might want.  The main thing missing is the surf zone aspect which almost everyone, without exception, would like help with.  I'll continue to work with Sean to see if they are putting together a follow up class.

Hi there,

Will it possible for my 10-yr son and I to take this class in a tandem?  We only started kayak fishing a year ago and this course will benefit both of us.  However, he does not meet the minimum age requirement.  We can bring our own tandem if necessary.  Thanks.

I just sent your question to Sean at CCK and will let you know after I get a response.

So talking with CCK the class will cost $119 but if you bring your own gear it will be $99

I am waiting to hear beck on the date as they are trying to work around a few other events like the AOTY/DOTY awards event at TC on 2/7. I'm really hoping they are able to as I am hoping to make this event.

Response

"I think it will be fine having this person's 10 year old son there as long as he/she understands that there will be some technical input (weather, tides, safety and emergency procedures, etc) that is likely to be over his son's head unless he is super smart and mature.

He may benefit from a private lesson or perhaps his other parent could be there as well and the 10 year old could just do the on-water strokes and rescue practice and not have to be in the class for the full duration.

It would be a good idea if they brought their own tandem if they have their own as the skills practice will be much more relevant."
