i'm gonna take a guess here and say it will be a bust!  Not enough people will buy a ticket and it will be like the Muni System in SF......but we will all be paying for it for a long time,,,, just like the Bay Bridge.

Over budget, under utilized, will not generate enough sales to be self-sufficient, increased development in the the Central Valley corridor will add more strain to our already strained resources, the perception of affordable homes in the valley will quickly disappear as investors and hedge funds swoop in to buy up property making it unaffordable for families escaping already inflated home prices and a select few will scoop up billions in public funding through gov. contracts to build this fiasco.

Something I'll never get to ride, not that I'd want to go to LA.  It won't be done in my lifetime but I hope my grandkids, which I don't have yet, don't mind their inheritance paid for it.

Am I the only one who likes Amtrak? Lots of leg room, quiet ride, outlets for your laptop, no one reclining their seat into your lap, and no slow ass security check points.

A true bullet train with minimum number of stops connecting San Francisco to Los Angeles would put the regional commuter airlines out of business.

I too am a fan of Amtrak.  The bullet train boondoggle money would be better spent on upgrading Amtrak.  I've done most of Amtrak's routes.  Aging equipment and on time schedules seems to be the biggest issues.  Not really an issue with me however because I've learned to expect delays and figure them into my plan.  Just sit back and enjoy the adventure, like derailments, lightning strikes and crazy people.  Good coffee and being from Chico, not that I drink, but anywhere in the country, hometown beer, Sierra Nevada.

Amtrak is a great train, but financially they suck the big giant one.  They have been in the negative for a really long time.  That is the issue.

There isn't a large scale ground based mass transit system in the world that is wholly self-sufficient- they're all subsidized.

That said, pretty f'ing stupid where this first segment runs. Nowhere to nowhere (more or less).

The projected fares from SanFrancisco to L.A. are comparable to the cost of a Southwest flight.  Why would anybody choose to spend 3 hours on a train vs flying?

I guess if you really hate airports or flying this would be for you.

No intrusive search like flying!  No having to get to a crowded airport 2 hours before a flight.  Maybe no baggage fees!  I'd ride a horse there rather than fly!
