Remember everyone, if you plan to use live minnows, DON'T!  Live minnows are illegal at Rollins Lake.  The fine is like $500 from what I have been told.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

You can't catch bluegill and use them for bait either.

It's not a grey area at all Ron. It is Black and White in the law.

Like sodomy laws... Not often enforced and when asked, wardens mostly say "as long as they are used in the location caught..." OK... But ya... Letter of the law is No... For this purpose , NO... Ok Rob?!!?!? :smt005

Is Rollins located in the Sierra district?  If so, then you cannot use live OR DEAD finfish as bait.  The dead fish rule tends to surprise folks who don't regularly fish the Sierra district.  Doesn't matter if the fish came from the same body of water or not.

I just don't wanna hear of any NCKAers getting dinged for violating the baitfish rule!

It is legal to use SW species (chovies, herring, sardines) for bait, just not any FW finfish.  Reg below supersedes specific Sierra District reg stating no finfish (4.30).

ARTICLE 3. BAIT REGULATIONS FOR INLAND WATERS
4.00. BAIT-GENERAL.
Legally acquired and possessed invertebrates, mollusks, crustaceans, amphibians (except salamanders), fish eggs and treated and processed foods may be used for bait, except:
(a) No species specified as endangered, threatened, candidate, fully-protected, or otherwise protected under state and federal law may be used as bait.
(b) No salamander may be used as bait. See section 5.05 for other amphibians that may be used as bait.
(c) See Section 5.35 for restrictions on crayfish;
(d) See Section 7.50(b)(74) for restriction on bait collecting in Hat Creek;
(e) No trout may be maintained or possessed in a live condition in any container on or attached to any boat;
(f) Except for restrictions listed under special regulations, dead ocean fish may be used as bait statewide. This section supersedes the provisions of sections 4.10, 4.15, 4.20, 4.25 and 4.30.

Thanks for mentioning that John.  I forgot to mention the exemption for dead ocean fish as bait.  Landlocked Chinook love anchovies!  :smt003

This is an off-topic question, but do you think this rule also covers anadromous non-salmonids like American shad?  Because that stuff makes amazing bait.
