Because some people don't read regulations and they can make a quarter off of them.

I was going to say old stock but the regulation change has been in effect for 2 years. Perhaps these are for sturgeon fishing somewhere outside of California where 2 barbed hooks are still legal? At the very least there should be a warning that these are illegal to use here.

So, let me understand your bash against the only company ever to host a free kayak event.
You seem upset about a product being sold that can be repurposed at a reduced price ... is this correct?
You also seem to not be able to comprehend that two hook rigs can be used for other species or in other areas ... is this correct?
I can only imagine that you also dont believe that that this post by a moderator is very harmful and ofensive to a buisness that has suported this site on many occasions.
So,
just for common knowledge, I will clear the air about these items being sold at a reduced price.
1. When rules change, we still have inventory that still has to move.
2. It would not be cost effective to throw out inventory.
3. The tackle industry as a whole is strugling.
4. Customers are ALWAYS educated about the proper gear.
5. F.W. has been a HUGE supporter of NCKA and P.I.F. , and doesent deserve this bash from a "moderator".
I may be a little over the top, but this just boils me.
F.W. and NCKA was my project, and to get bashed for a basic buisness practice is way out of line.

I don't think that they are the only tackle shop selling them in California.
pretty sure I have seen them at Walmart, sportchalet, big 5 and many smaller stores in the bay area.

and the gear that you buy here in California does not need to be check in when you go across the State line.

OOOOORRR......if you read the simple non abrasive question in the title "Why would FW sell these?" and give a simple professional answer like:

Since the regulations regarding sturgeon rigging has changed, these have not been selling well. Rather than see them go to waste we are selling them at a reduced rate as they can easily be re purposed to target other species.

That was actually very easy to do.
The only bashing I saw was from a FW rep.

because guys like me who dont sturgeon fish will buy them - like a I did a few years back-to use for another reason -it has sat in my box ever since...If I WAS to surgeon fish though---I would for sure read and learn the regs..like I do for every fish....and not just cast this into the water after seeing sturgeon on the label...

I can see the point of the post though...people are stupid and will do stupid stuff...like use the wrong rigging without checking....

Why do tackle shops still sell all these salmon lures and leaders with barbed hooks?

Same reason....pisses me off though that I have to change out the hooks and can't just use it out of the package  :smt013

But I know this when I buy them because I read the regs.

Because they make great shark fishing leaders?

Go buy salmon gear at Outdoor Pro Shop. I had a hell of a time finding pre-rigged barbless set-ups.

This is a snapshot of a larger problem. Stores that sell tackle should make it absolutely clear when they sell an item that is illegal to use for it's advertised purpose.

Just think of all the salmon spoons, apex, salmon mooching rigs, etc. advertised specifically for salmon fishing in California yet come prerigged with barbed hooks. Think of all the crab hawks. Think of all the crab traps without escape rings. The list is long, and the industry practice is pervasive. It's damn near everyone in the game, FW just happened to be singled out here but this is an indictment of the entire industry.

Mods are members too.  Even if FW paid for advertising here, which they don't, there would be no implied consent that they would behave any different than any other member.  That expectation itself is just not cool.  Mickfish's question is a fair question.

look at the end of the question, that emotion makes it abrasive.
This state changed the rules and we kept our product, but reduced the price.
A few years ago, they closed the ocean salmon season, and we kept the product, but reduced the price. Now we have a salmon season and like all other tackle shops, we had some gear to sell at a fair price. Also we have a great deal of anglers who fish in canada and alaska, so we were still catering to our customers. I know its hard to believe, but we do have customers all over the country and the world for that matter. We do cater to our local customers as well as our on line customers. The beliefe that we are doing something wrong by offering a product that is still available for a select group is plain ignorance. Wricht next to these items we also sell product for the california angler.
Funny,
there is a shop in sac, selling spear guns that cant be used for most local fish, but nobody complains

All that barbed salmon gear is legal in CA, just not in the ocean. Just sayin'. No reason to bash FW here. Sturgeon gear we all know needs to be barbless, so those rigs would make good catfish or Striper gear. Who cares if they sell it?

I ty my own sturgeon leaders so when the law changed I went out an bought some appropriate style hooks, used a dremel to grind off the barbs and made some new ones.

Those leaders would work great with the barbs smashed flat or ground off for sturgeon, or as is for sharks.  But they are labeled Sturgeon Leaders, still as mentioned it's the anglers responsibility to know the regs, more than the shop doing the selling, as far as I know it's not illegal to sell barbed sturgeon leaders, just can't use them as is.

That's a pretty lightweight bash if I ever saw one, maybe misguided, seems like an overreaction on Yakhoppers part too.

Seems like wintertime grouchyness has come way early.
