Chart plotter is priceless in my opinion. Mark those reefs, schools of baitfish, structure, etc and hit them again each drift...

It's not just about getting home safely in the fog, it's about catching more fish.

I agree with alexb 100%   chartplotter invaluable for fishing. with out one your almost in the dark. you get a glimpse but dont know where it is.
the combo is so much easier then trying to run a seperate gps unit.

One of the neatest features, that is exclusive to Lowrance, is the TracBak.  While you are using you unit, it is automatically "recording" your fishfinder and let's say you hookup & drift while landing the fish.  You can "look back" on the fishfinder and see what you might have missed while landing that fish.  You spot some structure on the "look back".  You can instantly create a waypoint of that spot you passed over, let's say, 1/2 hour ago.  It knows where you were at when you saw that object on the fishfinder screen!

This feature really is awesome. I definitely use it, especially when the drift is fast. It's also great when you're trolling ("where was that bait ball I passed 15 minutes ago? Yup, found it.")

When salmon fishing, I always drop a waypoint each time I get a hit, then peddle back and troll the same spot again thoroughly.

Chart plotter is a must have in my opinion...

GPS just gives a set of numbers that determine your location. Chart Plotters take that info and place it on a chart/map.

Nowadays ... Nothing.  Back in the day, there was a difference.  I can only think of a couple GPS units that Dont have a chartplotter.  All lowrance units that are GPS are GPS chart plotters.

The only Elite models that DONT have a chart plotter/GPS are notes as an 'X' - example: Elite 4x or 5x.  The 'x' refers to fishfinder only.  If the 'x' were an 'm' then it would be chartplotter/GPS only and no fishfinder.

If you buy an Elite 4 hdi or Elite 5 hdi or Elite 7 hdi they have ff & chartplotter/GPS.

I got in on the West Marine Elite 4 HDI deal.  Now I just need for it to arrive, the weather to improve and to find the time!  Looking forward to seeing the difference between this and my 8+ years old HB FF.  Thanks for starting this thread!
