We get in teams of say 4. It is up to each team how they bait, stalk and photo the thieves in the act with the evidence. We coordinate with a team of judges back at the boat ramp who contact the authorities to make the bust.Split the entry fee money between 1st 2nd and 3rd team to get the busts. The t-shirts could be off the hook.
p.s. I'm just shooting from the hip here. Ideas welcome.

I think a lot of the theft occurs in darkness. You would need one person at the boat launch two on the water with night vision photographic equipment.

Perhaps you put something like dye on the rope that gets on their hands. Or mark the crabs. Get the hull # and call it in to the guys on the ramp. We must be clever and resourceful. Law enforcement doesn't have the resources to chase crab thieves and they never will. If we want something done about this, we will probably have to do it ourselves.

Let's recap so far ... a flotilla of kayakers dressed as pirates with cameras and night vision goggles just chillin', grillin', and runnin' covert ops to bust some unscrupulous crab thieves ? Despite that it could pass for a plot line out of a Rob Schneider movie, this sounds AMAZING !!!  :smt003

or we could be like everyone else and do nothing. Let the thieves go about their business and be grateful when we don't get ripped off. How do you roll? Hunting crab thieves sounds like a fun and exciting way for NCKA to give back to the honorable fisherman of the community to me.

You are right Jack. Its a GD fucking shame that some assholes cant even get a couple of traps and do their on work. Im in to help if some one organizes.

Make a video series of the stings from start to finish and make a YouTube channel. Advertise links to the channel at the ports along with pics of the criminals, their vehicles and boats.

We should have a name and shame website with pics of thieves and known / convicted poachers.

Anyone have a drone to get aerial footage?

I would let the port know you would be running a sting too, you might get a lot of help and any information you bring in would be received better.

I'm sure you could better your chances of getting a thief to visit your pots by having a fake radio conversation with a buddy about having a bunch of jumbos in a certain area and you're gonna soak again at such and such a spot tonight.

Just making a joke. To be clear, I'm totally in. Shit only stops happening when people with a vested interest finally gather together and take a stand to keep it from happening.

How far from the beach is this happening? I need to get a zero.

I am imagining some sort of rig with emergency flares/smoke rigged to pull when "others" try and bring up the traps.

That or some rig that releases a    Net of some sort of poly rope to foul a prop... (Probably over thinking that one.)
