Does anyone know if we have a distance we have to stay away from the bridge/structure?

Not sure about the distance from the bridge but this sounds like an epic trip.  I was going to ease up on fishing for a while but I might try to join you all.  I have done lots of sailing in that area and have always thought it would be good to fish there.  What about the fishing just inside the bay in that area say near Yellow Bluff?  I imagine that there would be rockfish in that area also.  But with the tides for the weekend it looks perfect for an out the gate trip.  Be sure to post the day that you will be going.

You do have to stay clear of the bridge towers but it's not a great distance - can't remember exactly but I don't think it's more than 50 yards.  Just inside the gate would also be a great spot to fish for those not sure about heading out the gate.  I just want to paddle in this spot - the fishing will be a bonus!  I will post by Thursday which day will work for me.

I've had what they told me were seven gill sharks break 90# wire leaders off ,like they were nothing, while fishing off Sulfer bluff. There is a group of guys that fish with special terminal tackel and quasi-mooch for salmon off of Sulfer bluff as well. I have caught Lings, Halibuts, perch, kingfish, and large batt Rays between the pier and the first big rocks headed towards the bridge. This should be KILLER. Sackyak- I hope the hand healed OK Randall

Hey!  Sounds great.  Trouble is I can't make it.  Couple things though.  First, it's not a place for newbies (as someone pointed out).  Can be treacherous.  However, you picked the perfect day(s).  Small tides are the safest, and the best of all scenario is to have the ebb in the morning so you can ride it out -- and the flood later to ride back in on.  You NEVER want to be bucking a big ebb in the afternoon.  Current runs against the prevailing westerly wind and creates big steep waves at entrance to bay (GGB).

Another thing to keep in mind is the possiblility of fog. We had 50 foot visibility Sunday (22nd)and Monday(23rd) at times this week.  You don't want to  be paddling along in the main ship channel with limited vis.  Stay near the edges. Vessel Traffic is on VHF channel 14.  If you listen for a while you'll pick up what big/ commercial ships and tugs (with tows) are moving.  Good idea to always have one of those portable little air horns handy if you're navigating in this area. This pic (if my post works)was taken 10 AM Sunday looking west on the approach to the south tower.  It cleared up about an hour later.

The security zone is officially 25 yards from the towers so isn't really much of a problem.

And JTF.  That's one hell of a long paddle from Treas Island!!  About 5+ miles.  Then depending where you fish it could be another mile or two!  MUCH better to do the put in at the CG station at Fort Baker.

Randall -- will catch you another time. Leave some fish for later!

I'll be out there on Sunday running one of those Red & White Fleet tour boats under the bridge.  Let me know what channel you guys are on.  At least I can maybe hear you hollering when you catch something!!

I'll be waiting for those pic's -- and to hear what worked :smt001  Chuck

Scupperguy-Cap of the Ferry, gentleman i met at Mendo before the fest? good to hear from ya. This sounds like fun just don't know if this is above my skill level or not. very little tide, experienced company, good weather and light wind. I know the area and know how treacherous it can be If the stars align just right this could be very memorable. Wish you could Go!  Randall

The monkey face is one of the grossest things I have ever seen. Spooky looking face, SLIME, Impossible to hold and stink to boot. Supposed to be super sweet meat. Randall

Wish I could be there! Sounds like you guys picked a perfect weekend. I've done this trip several times so it's not that hard. The kayak rental place in Sausalito takes their clients out past the gate often (well they always seemed to be out the same time i was - which were the good days).
This trip is always memorable for me cause when i see pics of the GG, I sez to myself - I fished there! Be sure to get some pics!
Don't forget to stop by the old coastguard boat launching area, below the lighthouse. Theres some old timber sticking out of the water that holds lots of fish! Wave hi to the shore fisherman for me!   :smt006

:cowboy_cool: Geez, thanks for the advice, but if your not gonna meet me at the launch with red bulls and twinkies, why would I want to drive all that distance when I could paddle.  Seriously, never heard of me, I rock a tarpon 160, I dont play.  Look for me when I pass your red & white boat.    :smt066  JTF..

O.K. JTF.  You got me.  I'm thinkin: "What is the easiest way to get to the fish without having to paddle a hundred miles"  And you're thinkin :"What is the easiest way to get to the fish without having to DRIVE "  I can appreciate that.  You go guy!

Will be listening for you on the VHF

Remarkably, I am not out of WAF and am clear to go.  Let's pick a day at time to meet and I will be there.  I have some experience sailing under the gate on many occasions in various conditions and am familiar with the currents and how dangerous it can be there.  From my perspective, it looks like a great window.  I have to drive from Monterey or head up the night before and crash at at friends or relatives place so the sooner we settle on a date and time the better for me.
