Since I started all this I'm going to say Sunday, but I could still do either (or both since I'm only 15 min. away).  Plus, with the time change that means a sunrise of around 6:30 instead of 7:30!  An extra hour of fishing!  Remember, there's a great plan "B" in this spot, which is to stay inside the gate and work the water between the bridge, Angel Island and Sausalito.  Scupperguy, VHF Ch. 69.

BTW, what Scupperguy said about the shipping channel is no joke.  One out-bound shipping lane actually comes pretty close to the Marin coast - see above (that's a great site for getting chart info - it was probably recommended by someone on this site!).  That lane come between Angel Island and Alcatraz, then angles around a big marker buoy there and heads out.  Sorry to bring geometry into this, but the shipping lane bisects the Bridge at an angle - not all ships coming in and out the gate are perpindicular to the bridge and in the middle of the gate.  Zoom out on that link to get the big picture, monitor Ch. 14 and stay out of the way of the big boys!

Another thing to keep in mind while on the water is the horns that the ships use to signal other boats.  Four horns means get out of the way.  Sunday is sounding good for me.

Sunday is good for me also, I will most likely just paddle to meet you guys and then troll on my way back.  Seriously, I will not launch if I dont have visibilty to the gate.  Other than that, i know where not to get hit by big boats, in shallow water,  :smt002 its the small boats I worry about.  JTF..

Ty, 15, and I have never been in the ocean on Kayaks. We are just starting to outfit and are lacking radios, fish finders, and Gps. We will not go out of the gate if it is not perfect. I hope the conditions allow us too and that there is someone coming with enough experience to let us know the ropes. Nobody will be responsable for us  and I am very cautious to take chances with Ty. That being said, I will bring frozen Squid & anchovies. If we get out of the gate I was thinking would it be best to shoot up the coast ,fishing the points along the way, while we have the tide then timing our turn around and fish the whole way back? Any thoughts?

I hear you Randall.  While I do have FF, Radio etc. not to mention significant ocean experience, caution is always the best approach.  We will have fun whether we end up with plan A or B or C for that matter.  The bay can be its own challenge especailly when both wind and current are present.  Luckily we will not have much current (much being a relative term for the SF bay).

With regard to the fishing plan, do you guys really think we will be hitting salmon?  If so, would we troll, trouch, mooch with the current with say a sardine or squid on a dropper with a circle hook?  Can someone advise regarding rigs to use and method and fish targeted for the paddel out/back.  I am fairly well versed in the standard rockfish/lingcod rigs and have plenty of those ready.  What do you guys recommend?

Depending on the current, I like the idea of hitting the coves and points etc.  With the FF, I can identify good bottom and usually also fish if they are there.  I am curious how far we will actually end up going?  Remember the ebb is always stronger because of the river outflow.  If the fishing is good close why go far.

I'm not trying to go for distance as much as scenery. I hope the day is as beautiful as it sounds like. I am guilty of being a little greedy as far as if you go, go big! Safty then takes over and makes me behave. I'm hoping for a very mixed bag as far as spiecies go.So a little bit of everything as far as Tackle, Someone have a short tackle list?

Bigfoot, I'm with you on the scenery.  Like I said earlier, the fishing will be a bonus.  Regarding safety, at least we will be launching from a manned Coast Guard station!  The CC will be minutes away from us - a big plus.  As far as the chances for Salmon, it will be a long shot (as it seems to be EVERYWHERE right now) but all those Salmon on their way to the Sac river have to go right through there, so we might as well troll/trooch/mooch for them as we head to the coves.  In fact, I was on a party boat about 15 years ago that actually targeted them there after we got shut out at Dux.  Drifted from Bonita Cove to the Bridge a couple of times, then drifted from the Bridge towards Angel Island - and I remember we caught a couple!  People also target Salmon from shore at Yellow Bluff and did from the North Tower before Homeland Security closed off access.  We could troll RSK's etc. with Anchovy's then just drop those rigs to the bottom when we get to the coves.  Have a separate RF/Ling jigging rig.  One last thing - I saw on Coastside that Fish and Game has been spending a lot of time at Dux this week, and they'd be going right by us to get there, so make sure you have everything in order regarding the regs.

Andy
