Those are some pretty slow moving tides, a necessity in this spot...Anyone interested?  I've been wanting to do this but would need some experienced company.  Troll for Salmon, drift Bonita & Kirby cove for Halibut or even WSB, or rockies/lings along the cliffs.  If nothing else, you can't beat the scenery!

I have fished around the coast guard search & Rescue/Pier/harbour many times and always thought a kayak trip from there through the gate and north would be great. If i'm reading the tides right thats only a 6 inch tide. That slack of a tide is the only way I'd go through th gate but it sounds perfect. Now all we need is an experienced guide. Any takers???  Tthis sounds like a epic in the making!!!!!  Randall

Bigfoot, you got the tide right.  Better yet, it's a slight outgoing, then a little bit more incoming to bring us right back.  Also a piece of cake launch from Horseshoe Cove.  I'm still trying to figure out which day will be best for me, and I have the word out to a few non-NCKA friends.  I have VHF but no FF or GPS.  I hope we can get a couple of the regulars out there!

i should be able to make that trip what ever day you go. I have done that in a boat but a kayak should not
be a problem + you can mooch under the bridge if the salmon are there I think I will pack lite and
leave the baittank at home no beer :smt083 just lures and dead bait because this area can be dangours but with
the slack tides it should not be all that bad but even on a good day thing's can go wrong under the gate I seen large
boats get caught in eddies and spin around this can easily flip a kayak that is drifting with the current.

I'm in on this.  I'm gonna launch from treasure island and head straight for alcatraz.  2.07 nautical miles, from there, its another 2.5 nautical miles.  I'll probabley troll most of the way so I'm figureing i'll be at the gate by 900am that morning.  Great tides that day for the GG.  JTF..

Yahoo!  Looks like we'll have a good crew.  Sean, my plan was to launch from Horseshoe Cove/Ft. Bake pier area, just to the east of the GG Bridge.  You can pull right up to the water to a sheltered launch - there's even a boat ramp there (I don't think it's used much though).  This would be like launching at a lake - no surf launch for sure.

http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Sausalito,+CA&ie=UTF8&z=15&ll=37.835683,-122.484169&spn=0.01576,0.042915&om=1

Regardless of direction on 101, this is the Alexander Ave. exit from 101, just to the North of GG Bridge.  Where you see Bunker Road, you have to go left here like you're going to Ft. Cronkite (there is no right turn here), then right at the tunnel turns you around and takes you down Bunker Rd. to Conzelman Rd. to the water.  The launch is right at the Coast Guard Station.  Now, which day???  Maybe we'll have a few people launching each day for maximum flexibility.

I might join you all on my inflatable.  I heard that the cove of Point Bonita is good for halibut if they're around.

 info from  Hobi-Wan Kenobi

Launch from the boat ramp (by the Coast Guard Station) near Ft Baker.

I would do this on a day w/ small tides as you can imagine all that water rushing from the Bay through GG makes for extreme currents. These currents will effect you if you go to the middle so stay relatively close to the sides as eddys will keep you from flying out the Gate.
I'd time it toward the bottom of the outgoing and then drift out to Pt. Bonita, then on the incoming it will be easier to get back to your launch.

Areas to Fish:

On the way to the GG, you'll see to large rocks. There's lings in this area and a ling hole in the smaller rock (check it out). On the back side are plenty of boiler rocks. I'd fish in it in my Hobie but in a conventional, I'd skip it cause if you get snagged up, it'll be hard to avoid the rocks and trying to fish at the same time.

Under the GG by the north tower you can catch lots of Rockies and Lings. Use a large (6oz to 8oz) leadhead to get to the bottom fast. Cast ahead of your drift so that your line is vertical to your yak when your swimbait hits bottom. Also use 20lbs Power Pro to keep your line down. If you're hooking up, make several passes (don't leave fish to find fish). Otherwise move on to...

The sandy areas past the GG - great Halibut spot. Keep an eye on your FF for sandy areas mixed occaissional w/ rocks - prime spots. Work around the areas (sandy beaches will indicate the areas to start w/). You may want to add a stinger hook to your swimbaits for increase hook-ups.

As you head toward Pt. Bonita you'll encounter larger submerged rocks which will have RF, lings, MFEELS and Perch.

monkey face. I watched a guy poke pole for them right where we will launch from. He caught a couple 24"+. Said they tasted great but stank so bad while cooking they would run you out of the house? Do we have to keep clear fo the bridge fo security reasons?
