Also if you haven't practiced self rescue, start in warm calm water and practice proper technique. There's tons of info online.
Practice what works best for you & do it over & over & over again.
Then try it in the ocean.

I'm thinking of a warm water self-rescue practice at Lake Sonoma on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 17).  Anyone interested?

Just to reemphasize what SuperVato said:
TimberCove has limited parking so parking along the hwy is going to be necessary. Please park accordingly and respect the residence.
Be prepared to wheel your kayak.
Brenda(the owner) charges $8 a person to launch.
Please pay otherwise she'll track you down...I've seen it :smt005.
11:00am is when the clinic starts.
Sean Morley will be teaching the clinic.
Think as this as a big think tank. Lets brainstorm ideas and talk about any experiences/stories we might have.
We'll either meet on or just off the beach/launch.
Be prepared to get wet.
The idea is to experience what it's like to flip your kayak into our freezing ocean and self rescue as fast as you can.
Basically wear what you would normally be wearing when you go out. I would think twice about doing it in blue jeans and t-shirts tho. I've seen you guys out there :smt009
This should go without saying, Life jackets are a must! Don't be stupid
I'll bring some wood for a beach fire. If anyone would like to bring more, that would be great too.
I'm stoked and excited about all the interest this is getting.
This is a good thing. :smt004

I would definitely show up for this if it's going to happen.  Time? Exact location?

I don't currently have a FJ. I just had my shorty sent from the east coast. I may have to wait untill I pick one. I prefer to  be prepared with the correct gear, then regretting it.

I'll do some searching and see if I can pick one up. Budget is tight as I just bought the new yak, and need to buy a little at a time.

I'd love to go but being new to the area what are my expectations and what gear do I bring with me. I'm a warm water guy from the east coast so this is all new to me. Also can you post a map or give directions from Vacaville?

I'll be bringing the pro angler, is it even possible to hit the rough stuff in that? Regardless, I look forward to meeting ya'll
Timber Cove is north of Ft. Ross and south of Salt Point State Park, limited beach parking is available(about 8 spots) at TC, more parking along highway 1. Hand launch fee is $8. 30yds ramp down to cove is moderately steep, I doubt you would want to wheel the PA down by hand but drop it off or get there early and grab a parking spot. I would say that TC would be as possible to launch as anywhere into the salt, but as with anything it is dependent on conditions and your abilities. Sounds like there will be lots of folks for company. The decision to launch IMO must be yours, it is one of the responsibilities of the sport. Please search "dress for immersion" you will get loads of info. 3mil fj wetsuit is a absolute minimum, some will say that isn't enough. I hope my tone is friendly, I mean for it to be.  be seeing you,Amos

I'm planning on camping Saturday night so I don't have to leave the house at three in the morning. Does anyone want to split a campsite? We need to pay for two nights or else we have to checkout before the clinic is over, which would mean breaking camp before going fishing in the morning. Also does anyone know how the cell service is at the campgrounds in the area?

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan
