these are not legal for use on halibut, I know that.
pretty much the only fish you can legally use a kage on in Ca are sharks and rays.

this is true :smt005

if you are in the water, you are spearfishing and can "take" any fish that is legal to spear.
If you are aboard a vessel ( kayaks count) and you are line fishing, spearing as a method of take is illegal. Net or curved hook gaff only are allowed.

yup, those regs make perfect sense :smt005.

Think about how bad ass that would be. Bring a barn door PAC butt to the boat then jump out of the yak and spear it with a kage.

It's technically illegal to spear fish while floating on the surface too... :smt044 damn lawyers! (also can't spear fish while standing on the bottom) You have to be actively swimming or underwater...I think...

Sounds like you can go out rod & reel fishing and then switch over to spearing or vice versa. Another bummer brought to us by the DFG :smt012

Kirk, that only applies when hook and line is closed for a species...so, for example, if I'm shooting rockfish and Lings during the winter when you guys can't fish for them I can't have a rod and reel in my yak and say I was just targeting perch...

But once H and L is open for RCG/Lings then I am allowed to bring the rod and reel out in case I get tired diving and then switch over.  :smt001
