Is there some sort I way we can know who has a current license or not to guide? Are kayak guides required by law to have guide books on their person like a boat and license for us as paying customers to check?
I'd like to hire a guide for a certain species I can't seem to catch, but don't want to pay someone not following DFG laws.

Sorry more specific:

Guides ARE required to have their "daily trip" book or sheets with them.  Customers have to fill out their info name, fishing lic # etc on these sheets BEFORE launching. also required to have the separate guide license on their person while guiding.

No tests are required, a valid fishing license is needed, they ask about any previous DFG violations, and proof of a 1000$ bond is required.

So any Yahoo can get a guide license, even me.  LOL.

"Species specific?"   Puh-leese!  How would DFG test for that? And, do you really want that kind of micromanagement added to what already seems an infinitely complex and confusing system of regs?

Go take a look at the guides list on dfg website.  applicants can submit their 'specialties' and that info is included on the list.  If someone claims to be a LMB expert, but he sucks, the marketplace will correct I think.

If one is choosing a guide, it's totally legit to ask for references or look for others who have used that guide to get their take on the service.

I've guided quite a few people on different species, land, sea and river, but I've never charged a fee.  I left the general contracting business I'd been immersed in for 18 years last year and am now seeking employment in a field that suits my personality (read:  "mid life crisis" and lucky enough to have a wife with a job).  I've enjoyed taking on some projects, taking care of my kids and the household, and having time to fish and have fun along the beach and the rivers, but it's time for me to get the engine revved again.  I've sent in my bond, check and application, and my license should be here within two weeks.  Ironically, I've not fished that much more than when I was working FT!

I'll be working with Pacific Outfitters on Trinidad trips while I work up my own marketing and plan for how to see if this can actually work for me!  I hope to develop a clientelle that really wants a Nature Trip first, and a fish would be a bonus, but you know I'm addicted to the chance at the big one.  A huge part of why I'm giving this a go is that I've had lots of friends from this site along on trips where I had previous experience, knowledge, and success, and we ended up having incredible adventures with amazing results.  The photos, narratives and videos are obviously a huge part of it for me, so of course I want to incorporate all of that as well.  I see it like this:  I've been involved in a consistent series of notable experiences where seeking and providing thorough documentation not only made it more vivid for those viewing the report, but actually made it more of an adventure for me as I worked hard to get the footage, the photo or the true experience to share in writing!  I've been doing that for years, and subsidizing it!  Why not try to provide that experience and have it as a source of income?  I truly want to spend the rest of my days in the wild, on the water, in the woods and along the beach, and I want to keep sharing it.  I've also got two kids to put through college in a few years and no retirement program...  It's all good, and I have a backup plan.

So I'm going for it.  My hat is in the ring.   :smt001

I would hire you, Eric!

I was trying to guide through headwaters, but it has been a few months and I have yet to hear back from them.  I have been looking for other shops to guide out of. Any suggestions?  I want to find a viable way guide before I drop money on a license and bond.

WTG Eric!  Feel free to contact if you have any questions etc.  I've kept a guide license for 12 or 13 years now.  I don't rely on it for any fat bank account, but it does cover a most of my fishing expenses, including occasional trips and such.

ATD- if you work through a shop, I think you still need to have a guide license if you're taking any fish. Even if it's not a specific regulation, I would advise having that special permit for versimilitude if nothing else.  Plus, through the many threads demonstrating "Warden discretion and interpretation," it's a CYA move for sure.  I have a casual connection with MBK and KC in Santa Cruz, taking out groups from those shops.  Really have strategized for them to assume the entire project with a licensed guide from their own staff.  Almost there with that.

Shop can provide more an umbrella though of insurance as well as handling the bookings and calendar, which can get irritating.

I must have mistyped.  I had always planned to get my license (I wouldn't take money for guiding without one.), I wanted to go through a shop for the reasons in your second paragraph..  -end threadjack- :smt003

Dilbeck hit the nail on the head with his last two posts.  And this may not have been the best way to go at it and I apologize to this forum.  but I am glad to have found this site, I will be lurking, getting some good tips.

generally I fish from a canoe.  similar to the one on this website:

http://riverbassin.com/forum/showthread.php?6436-My-Rendition-of-the-Tricked-Out-Old-Town-Guide-119

hope it's not a sacrilege to put a canoe reference on this site.  I love to paddle, both canoes and kayaks.

and when in a canoe I generally use a double bladed paddle.  I recently bought a Tenkara fishing rod (google it), a very lazy but fun way to flyfish.  no reel involved.

but my initial post did get Dennis's attention, he called and left a message saying he shipped the gear Friday.

I'm hopeful this time.  what it is is a sail rig for canoes and kayaks.  not just a downwind sail but one that can tack and go into the wind.

again, my thanks to the members here on this forum.

I'd be happy if the moderator can remove this thread, I think there's a happy ending.

Hah your thread hasnt been deleted .. Typically here at NCKA we have a tough love keep em honest policy...

I ran an Old Town pack with paddle & motor for 5 yrs before i upgraded to my pro angler... Back then i was a ncka lutker too...No shame in runnin a solo canoe.. We do our best to be low impact so a solo canoe with a kayay paddle seems to fit the bill... When floating a river they are exceptionally killa..I still got mine

Good luck getting your order from Spike he seems to have a history ... Im sure youll get your stuff eventually...

Welcome to NCKA!!!

I have fished with Bushy and Eric. i cannot think of better guides. My in-laws and their friends hired Bushy in Monterey and had a great time. I would confidently send family and friends to Eric as well. Continued success, Bushy and best of luck on your new venture, Eric.
