There's giant signs on most freeways/hiways that state SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT. People seem to think that that's a general statement that couldn't possibly pertain to them, but if you are in any lane other than the farthest right lane and someone is directly behind you then YOU are slower traffic and should get over to let the car behind you pass.

Name three things in life that are easier than switching lanes to let someone pass.

If everybody had half a brain and could just follow that one simple rule then there would be A TON less traffic. It's amazing how many pockets of traffic there are simply because dumb ass people are oblivious to the fact that they are holding up the flow. When you drive long distances and weave in and out of the dumb-asses you'll see what I mean. You can call that "crazy" or "erratic" driving, but if slower traffic kept right there would be no need to, nor would it be possible to pass on the right.

If we were walking down the street and I was in a hurry and saying "Excuse me" most people will get out of the way. Not because I'm some tough guy or they're not....but out of simple common courtesy. Most people lose that common courtesy when they get behind the wheel.

I drive home from work on I-80 at 1130 at night between Fairfield and Sacramento.
Most people leave the 1 lane open for the fast guys. But there always is the one asshole in the lane who gets on the freeway then immediately goes to lane 1 and put it in cruise control at speed limit. It's the inconsiderate folks that I can't stand... And the Fast n Furious crowd that thinks 80 is the autobahn.

Also, I agree that driving in the #1 lane is a dick move. I drive pretty conservatively and almost always in the center or right lane except to overtake. I just don't think it's healthy to get pissed off about someone going the speed limit in the left hand lane.

I cimpletely agree. Road rage, as evidenced by the vid, leads to problems, and we should all be courteous drivers and keep to the right except to pass or make a left. But, passing on the right is dangerous. Drivers are not accustomed to looking for vehicles passing on the right, so I rarely do. When Im on the bike, though, if I can safely pass on the right ill usually give a heavier twist to get out of the danger of 1)being stuck behind someone that might be going slower than the FLOW of traffic and 2) to minimize my exposure to their right side. Car is different, i usually drive slow. But on a bike I need to be in the most optimal position to be in control of my safety.

So if the speed limit is 50 and you are in the left lane going 50, and other traffic wants to pass, are you operating a "slow moving vehicle" with a duty to keep right?

Yes.

Because you are the slower moving vehicle.

I do about 70 on the freeway, which is above the speed limit in most places, yet I'm constantly being passed.  I stay as far right as possible unless passing someone else.

But I'm traveling the posted speed limit.  That sign refers to those traveling less than the posted speed limit.

So much this. Try making eye contact on the freeway. It's hard. Almost no one does it. Oblivious.

It is simple common courtesy, if you are not going faster than the lane to your right, get over.  If i am doing 75 in the number 1 lane and a car comes up from behind that is going faster, I will move over.  That is how I was raised.  I never could understand why people feel hey need to be in the number 1 lane when it is the number 2 lane that is usually faster.  Especially in traffic.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

Hey, I'm all for just hanging in the "slow" lane or middle lane.  No worries here....  Curious now about the whole definition of 'Slower Traffic Keep Right' vs posted Speed Limit as far as the California State Vehicle Code is concerned.  At face value, it would seem that one contradicts the other.

But I'm traveling the posted speed limit.  That sign refers to those traveling less than the posted speed limit.

The sign refers to slower traffic. It does not say TRAFFIC GOING SLOWER THAN POSTED SPEED LIMIT KEEP RIGHT. It says SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT.

Other than that it's simple common courtesy.

If you're standing in the middle of the aisle in Wal-Mart blocking people from walking by I'll be the "dick" to tell you to your face that you're not standing in the best place. If you are going slow in the fast lane I will be the "dick" that gets six inches off of your bumper then passes you on the right and cuts you off. It has nothing to do with rules of the road and everything to do with common courtesy.

You can say what you want about my actions being hypocritical, but it is what it is.
