Good reasoning Al.  I always laugh when some ass has to speed past me on my way to work.  Speeding only saves a few seconds of time unless you are sustaining that speed for long periods of time/long distances.  Not worth it.  Lost my father-in-law in a car accident from someone who just "couldn't wait" to get where they were going.

Although the truck driver was overreacting the left lane is the PASSING lane. Move the f over and let him pass so these kinds of things don't happen. Being passive aggressive in the left lane is my pet peeve!

This happened on SR41 near Tampa, Florida. The driver was in the passing lane, and you can see in the video that she passed 2 trucks at 0:55 and 1:03 of the video before the tailgater passed her on her right and flipped her off. At the end of the video you can see she was in the left turning lane to making a left hand turn. There was no other lane she could be in to make that turn.

There isn't any law I'm aware of in California that says you have to change out of the number 1 lane of a multiple lane highway to allow a vehicle to pass. Passing on the right is legal and normal in California. Just go around on the right.

It would be nice if people moved over, but they don't and they aren't required to as far as I can tell.

I got pulled over for passing an elderly couple in a caddy doing 50MPH on the 101 in the left lane. I passed them on the right since they wouldn't move over and I had 2hrs of driving to get through. CHP pulled me over for it, said "no passing on the right regardless of slow traffic". I was super polite and he let me off with a warning.

now, I saw a speeding vehicle that matched mine not 5 minutes before he pulled me over, so to this day I think he actually popped the wrong driver, but when I mentioned it the officer got a bit angry so I let it go. But I'll always remember the incident 'cause I thought passing on the right, while not always cool, was legal in certain instances as long as the driving was not reckless.
that is the law i know,,,but crash says no.....and crash knows everything.

Both drivers were acting like asses.

Now...to understand why some people tailgate in the slow lane of a multi-lane highway.  :smt010

V C Section 21754 Passing on the Right

Passing on the Right

21754.  The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass to the right of another vehicle only under the following conditions:

(a) When the vehicle overtaken is making or about to make a left turn.

(b) Upon a highway within a business or residence district with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width for two or more lines of moving vehicles in the direction of travel.

(c) Upon any highway outside of a business or residence district with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width and clearly marked for two or more lines of moving traffic in the direction of travel.

(d) Upon a one-way street.

(e) Upon a highway divided into two roadways where traffic is restricted to one direction upon each of such roadways.

The provisions of this section shall not relieve the driver of a slow moving vehicle from the duty to drive as closely as practicable to the right hand edge of the roadway.

Amended Sec. 39, Ch. 491, Stats. 2010. Effective January 1, 2011.

V C Section 21755 Pass on Right Safely

Pass on Right Safely

21755.  (a) The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass another vehicle upon the right only under conditions permitting that movement in safety. In no event shall that movement be made by driving off the paved or maintraveled portion of the roadway.

(b) This section does not prohibit the use of a bicycle in a bicycle lane or on a shoulder.

Amended Sec. 40, Ch. 491, Stats. 2010. Effective January 1, 2011.

Passing on the right is perfectly legal when two or more lanes of traffic are moving in the same direction.

It is not legal to pass on the right if you must leave the pavement to do so. For example, driving on the shoulder to pass someone is illegal, whether they are moving or stopped.

If a vehicle ahead is stopped to make a left turn, you can pass on its right if there is a lane intended for that purpose. Otherwise, you must wait.

I have seen a cop pull over a car who was driving in the left lane with cars behind them. Irrelevent of law its a dick move to block people from passing. You don't know if someone is in an emergency or not. This instance the truck driver was being a complete ahole and that was definitely road rage and he was in the wrong.
+1

I seldom stay in the fast lane, and when I do I only do it to pass another car. Sometimes people think they can drive on the fast lane at the speed limit and thinking everybody else trying to pass them are A-holes. A few years back I got a ticket for tailgating. Someone was driving 45mph on the fast lane because she saw a cop parked half a mile ahead. Not knowing what's going on, I tried to speed up enough to pass her, but by that time the cop saw me and chased me down to give me a ticket for tailgating. Crazy drivers should chill out, but slow drivers should stay the f*k out of the fast lane.

Please.

So if the speed limit is 50 and you are in the left lane going 50, and other traffic wants to pass, are you operating a "slow moving vehicle" with a duty to keep right?  Or is that intended for slow trucks/tractors trailers that can't keep even close to the speed limit. That doesn't say right hand lane. It says right hand edge, which brings to mind a single travel lane in my direction overtaking a motorhome that is crawling uphill.

Can someone point me to the regulations that allows drivers to go "faster" (aka "fast lane") than the posted speed limit?  Must I yield to traffic if I am in the "fast lane" & traveling the posted legal speed limit?

Also, I agree that driving in the #1 lane is a dick move. I drive pretty conservatively and almost always in the center or right lane except to overtake. I just don't think it's healthy to get pissed off about someone going the speed limit in the left hand lane.

I'm usually in no hurry either.  I stay on the right.  Let the next guy get the ticket...
