Huge advice for anyone hoping to be ready for what can be a tough bite at Shelter Cove:  learn to fish a hard tied barbless circle hook rig.  They're not available to buy that I've seen, so you have to tie your own.  If I'm not mistaken, the distance between the EYE of top hook and the CURVE of the bottom hook can't exceed 5" - these are not tough rigs to tie, and a proper one is surprisingly short on space to hook a herring or even an anchovy.  I posted up some rigs that I tied up last year, and Scott - the master, GreatBass - replies, "those look too big" (as in too much line between the hooks).  I was like, "I don't think so, I measured 'em..."  Damn if they weren't all but one too big!  I wasn't being precise enough, and by the time I corrected all of them I couldn't believe what compact rigs they were - that's not good for hooking a bait when you come from the "mooching slip rig" school.  Anyway, I hate working with the rig I'm describing with two circle hooks hard tied and no more than 5" apart, but it's what you need to have on your line in order to legally catch a salmon with bait if you're not trolling - or just one barbless circle hook...  That's what I'm talking about here - to legally catch a salmon with bait OTHER than trolling.  If you're trolling then you're able to use the slip rig, which is my mainstay - that's why I'm almost always trolling.  I get bored sitting in one place anyway...   :smt001

Is there anyone who might be willing and able to tie up a bunch of the legal mooching rigs and sell them as a donation to "the cause"?  I'm not that good with knots but will certainly be able to tie enough for me but it would be cool to have another option and a a fund raiser too.  Just a thought!  ???????  This would need to be a "side activity" and not add to the work already being done by Eric and others working the tourney.  The only tie to the event would be the passing of the money to the charity.

Personally, I wouldnt worry much about having a barbless circle hook rig because because your more likely to catch one trolling.  Another option for those not wanting to troll is to use a knife jig, speed jig, or iron with one barbless hook of yourthe choice on0 the bottom.  Charter boats do it as well as last year's AOTY champ, Adam, who caught his this way near where salmon are made at the red whistler.  Why limit yourself when mooching to the 5inch barbless circle rule when your chances of hooking a salmon are less.  Go with what you want, but from experience and talking to other guys who fish salmon in Shelter Cove, it is more common to troll or work barbless jigs to get salmon than mooching.  This years salmon bite may be tough with NOAA predicting an El Nino year which will bring in more warmer water.  That being said, trolling, going deep and finding cooler water will produce better results with salmon.  Chances are you will need to cover more ground or get to deeper water to increase your chances in hooking up with a salmon.  I will post my trip reports with info to help you find em once the season opens next month.  If the weather allows, I should log several kayak and a few boat trips for salmon before GS8.
