Sometimes late at night I'll have the urge to write about Shelter Cove...   

Just yesterday I met someone who'd never been there, and she's a lifelong Eureka resident.  She did recently go, and she expressed how awesome it was for her and her Dad to experience the beach, the ocean, the hills, the weather, offshore whales, and everything else that defines that unique spot along the Lost Coast.  I then suggested that she needs to get on a kayak to go chase those whales!

When I talk to locals who've never been there or who have only recently discovered it, I imagine their perception of the Cove, and I base that on my own, of course.  There's really nowhere comparable to it, and that's my first thought every time - "does this person realize how very unique Shelter Cove is?!" 

For those who have not been there, Shelter Cove is situated directly on the ocean at the base of a high ridge, with rocky shoreline jutting out and stretching about a mile between very different sand beaches.  To the north, the Lost Coast Trail starts along Black Sands Beach from Telegraph Creek where a dangerous shorebreak threatens any type of ocean user - the popular backpacking trail covers 25 miles from there, north to the mouth of the Mattole River near Petrolia.  On the south end of the rocky escarpment, Shelter Cove's namesake formation is characterized by a much different black sand beach where a southeast-facing shallow dropoff allows for easy launching, boogieboarding and surfing just east of the ramp, and nice access for vehicles and hikers to enjoy the beach between high tides.

So very much of the mystique of the Cove is about that time between high tides - look into that, and you'll be rewarded.

Once you experience a hot day down in the Cove and out of the north wind, with gentle little world class boogieboarding waves rolling in, and boat traffic is so easy in and out of the ramp...  You really can't beat the feel of being in the Cove for that type of outdoors activity.  The place bustles.  It humms.  With two m's. 

Reading this with a goal of being objective, I would advise this:  if you experience the Cove at its coldest, wettest, sandiest, skunkiest,...etc., then please keep trying - you have a good chance of encountering a special outcome.   

Up on the coastal escarpment the local layout is very appealing and functions as a resort for the resourceful fisherman and camper - a "kayakfisherman" is really not better suited for any other place, IMO.  The fish cleaning station is right there.  The campground and deli are right there.  The motels and Inns are right there.  The local restaurant and grocery scene makes it possible to subsist on the ocean with the best of side dishes on demand, if the conditions allow - by that I mean to say that with flat water, some spices, and a means of cooking, you can enjoy the best of rockfish, lingcod, abalone, salmon...etc., and whatever you get from the local food scene is a wonderful side dish!  Or, if it's rough or you don't have luck in your diving and fishing, you can be assured of good nourishment in the local eateries - the fish and chips at the Campground and Deli is well worth the $10+

I hear you Eric.  Fell in love with this magical place the very first time I set foot there!  Bought my first lot on Sea View on that same day with intention to build my vacatlion/get away house some day.  Met lots of wonderful people who lives in the cove and building a great community.  Can't wait to be back there in May!!!

Eric, your passion for this place speaks volumes about the extraordinary nature of it as well as the success of the Gimme Shelter Events.

I don't remember anyone ever complaining about a GS event (other than a couple isolated campground incidents). Even when wx conditions got in the way, I doubt anyone regretted being up there.

I'm looking forward to the hike and bringing a poke pole this year to take advantage of the low tides.
