I would defer to Yakuza or Hamachi John. I don't think a posted hookup is any different than a posted tournament as far as liability. We sign waivers for tournaments for a reason.

Let's say I posted a hookup and a newbie showed up. Then things go bad and he doesn't come back alive. Would I have some liability? Probably depends on the circumstances. If the hookup is at Bean Hollow and the newb gets eaten. Well my guess you would be liable. If he has a heart attack, probably wouldn't be liable.

I think all public hook ups for the SMC - Bean Hollow, Pigeon Pt. or that general area should be banned.  The risks are too great.  This the GWS backyard. I am not saying stop fishing there but just keep your communication private with your crew.  Most newbs don't know the history of that place.
glad you brought that up cause I didn't know

My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I have been reading the whole thread. I voted MO on the poll. I must say I like the idea of putting everything in the fishing report sections. That gives us a choice without making the site more complicated. I agree that the fishing report belongs in the hookup thread. A before and after action report all in one. If you post a public hookup, you can expect that anyone might show up. You can choose to only do that for safer locations or choose to offer safety advice in your post. If you post a members only hookup, you can let it be known that a RSVP must be made to join in. Then, if you choose, you can have a conversation with anyone you don't know that signs up. Talk about safety gear and expectations for when on the water. Or simply point them to the safety section or maybe a sticky or "how to" article on joining hookups. That gives us lots of flexibility, maintains privacy, and encourages safety without over complicating things for the mods.

Would you feed them to fish? Then the only way to join is to catch a prize fish! :smt044

As much I like the open nature of the NCKA forums, there's no question that some people lurk just to find the hot bite or crab spots. If we go the route of members only hook ups, there should be a short explanation page for newbs about what's expected of them and what they're missing. Hook ups are one of the draws that attract people here.

whats expected?  Be a decent human, and like to fish from a kayak safely.
I've never known such a caring, compassionate and responsible group of people and I think that the noobs learn to be that real quick if they want to be part of the close knit community we have.  Those that take NCKA for granted seem to drift away rather quickly....
just MHO tho.

I was also thinking it wouldn't be a bad idea to cull the ranks of old inactive accounts , but thats a different discussion....

I think you should have to write a 3-page essay (single spaced) references from three family members and three co-workers, your last two years of tax filing, a cheesecake, proof of completion of a hunters safety course, proof of insurance, six years worth of fishing licenses, a tickle-me-elmo doll and an autographed picture of Bea Arthur before you are allowed to even log onto these boards.

Then if you want to use the Hookups?? Well then it gets COMPLICATED...
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

YES!

I don't think we're in the business of telling you what to post (other than hookups, duh!) or how to post it.  It's up to the thread starter to bound the hookup however he sees fit.

That's exactly what I had in mind!  :smt005

What they'd be missing simply referred to newbs being able to see that they are often welcome to hook ups, as opposed to it appearing as an exclusive, members only yacht club kind of thing. . . . OK, yeah, now that I think about, that's probably never gonna happen here.  :smt017

As far as what's expected of them, I've sorta lost my train of thought on that one but was probably thinking about safety factors, like not showing up to an ocean hook up in jeans & a t-shirt and no pfd. This too:

Anyway, I like the idea of just combining hookups with the reports. Never really noticed a diff on NWKA; seems to flow seamlessly.

The cheesecake requirement should be implemented immediately, though.

I also like the idea of combining the hookup and report into a single thread, seems like it would be easier to maintain and follow.
