I still wonder what information the anonymous public needs with hookups.  About the only use of that info that I've heard discussed here in what Scott suggested in the original post.  And then I suggested Joe Public may use that general information (and not a specific hookup) as part of their decision making process regarding registering on the forum.

But what else?  I must be missing something.  All you guys that want this public, what else do you expect the public to do with this info?  Other than maybe randomly showing up unannounced at a hookup?

-Allen

There might be some people who like helping new kayak fishermen out and don't mind having them tag along.

Absolutely that's the case.  But without being registered, there is no way to coordinate with the person posting the hookup.  Posting and PM's are not enabled for "guests" on NCKA.

-Allen

Just a thought.

Might help to get people to register, with some explanation:

"Please register and introduce yourself if you are going to show up at a public hook-up, always good to know something about the people who may join us on the water"

Bryan

For the most part, that's like stating the obvious.  Until this thread I've never heard of someone not on the board shoring up at a hookup.  I'm sure it is an extremely rare event.  So people are already registering to go to hookups.

For the record, I could care less if the hookups was members only or not.  I don't actually think it makes much difference either way.  I have a slight preference towards not having 2 hookup boards, one for members and one for non-members.  It's a solution to what I believe is a non-problem and it just results in more boards.  More is not necessarily better.

Fifth and last what would Mooch say! From what I read he would say leave it public. As he liked to help people.

I need to get something off my chest here.  To me, using "what would Mooch say" in a discussion like this doesn't do his memory justice.  I don't think you (or I) can say with any certainty what he would say.

-Allen

I apologize to the board I guess I did go over board on this. And pray I didn't offend him.

I would defer to Yakuza or Hamachi John. I don't think a posted hookup is any different than a posted tournament as far as liability. We sign waivers for tournaments for a reason.

Let's say I posted a hookup and a newbie showed up. Then things go bad and he doesn't come back alive. Would I have some liability? Probably depends on the circumstances. If the hookup is at Bean Hollow and the newb gets eaten. Well my guess you would be liable. If he has a heart attack, probably wouldn't be liable.

I think all public hook ups for the SMC - Bean Hollow, Pigeon Pt. or that general area should be banned.  The risks are too great.  This the GWS backyard. I am not saying stop fishing there but just keep your communication private with your crew.  Most newbs don't know the history of that place.

Agree with last post.
Also when conditions are a bit sketch but the pros still do it cuz they have for years.

Maybe just put a warning number 1-5 on your hookups if need be. 1 for all 5 for pros etc.

Or just say this hookup ain't for any pussies. You know, man talk, like we used to before the internet.

I don't even post on the hook up board anymore hardly.

That's what happens with most veterans. Fishing groups/friends form over time and less vets post open hookups. I have my crew that I fish with most of the time, and Molly. However, if having a members only hookup section in addition to a public hookup section would encourage more vets to post hookups, that would be a good thing IMHO.

It's really pretty easy to post 20 times. I'm thinking that by 20 posts a person has been reading some of  the great advice we have available and is, however slightly that might be, more knowledgeable and more likely to participate safely.

One 2 occasions I personally PM'd 2 people about not going here.  One is  a new member who posted his own hook up who had no clue about 3 attacks there, the another a real good friend who just started fishing the salt. Fortunately both took my advice not to go.  I shake my head in disbelief and feel stunned very time I see a public hook up for this place.
This is where I am coming from.  Although it happened it Capitola, my right foot was 2 feet away from a big GWS mouth. http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=39339.0
This why I think posting public hook ups for this place is a big NO NO.

I would be in favor of having a MO hookup and a public hookup, just like in the fishing reports.
If it was, say, 200 (yes, two hundred) posts to see the MO hookup section then members could post with some sense of confidence that the person reading it would have a clue of what they were getting into.
If they didn't care who showed up then put it in the public hookup section.
Then for those who only want to fish with a select few, there's always the PM.

Understood Allen, been there know the work and time it takes. That is why my first vote was no hook-up section, for convenience when scanning through at the end of a work day I  like seeing the hook-up post and the results in the same thread in the same section as all the other fishing reports.

Suggestion of public and MO was one way to answer most of the concerns/comments that have been written.

Bingo.  I like that too.  When I set up NWKA, that's the way we did it there.  Hookups and reports in the same thread.  I like seeing the continuity of a hookup, the planning for the hookup, and the report on the hookup in the same thread.

Maybe we just do that here.  Do away with the current hookups board and use the members only reports and public reports for both hookups and reports.

That's funny. That is what Karen suggested. Members only hookups and reports section combined. I told her it would be anarchy.  :smt005 :smt005 :smt005

+1, that way the public report section could also have public hookups to kick start the thread.  I ws a lurker and shy for a long time before I became "known", so I have a little sympathy for the shy folks who still want to show up to a hookup and see if its for them...
