Since I am going sturgeon fishing now and you can't gaff or snare them, I figure I ought to have a club to subdue them with. I saw online, traditional wooden fish clubs, tire knockers and leather covered lead personal defense weapons. What might the pros and cons be? Thanks

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

I use the AFTCO
Super Strong Fish Bat
Model # 394538   |   Manuf. # FBAT2B
I picked mine up at west marine and it may work a little to good,  the first time I hit a ling it flattened it head lights out for that fish, and it's also floats.

I used to use a 1' piece of 1/2 pipe, i worked pretty well, but I lost it, and besides, I had to keep wrapping up the rusted spots with duct tape.
So I bought a wooden billy (also about a foot long) at the fishing store, it's some blond hardwood.  But it didn't
have enough umph, so I drilled out the end and plugged it with a 4 oz torpedo weight, gooped it in and ran a screw in from the side to hold it in place.

mine is similar. Used a piece of closet rod dowel drilled the end out for 4oz of lead, and then epoxied a copper cap over the end.

You better have it on a rope or game clip before you beat it and knock it off the barbless hook or you lap.

One of those foot long wooden mini bats with some tape wrapped around the handle for grip works pretty well.

also, make sure it lives in the bag/crate with all your fishing stuff, not under your car seat. otherwise it's an illegal weapon.

I bought a kids aluminum T-ball bat at a flea market for $2, planning on cutting it down a few inches, adding a lanyard and some grip-tape, will post the project when I have the time. :smt003

I had a replacement handle for a ball peen that I'd never used, grabbed it on the way out one day and have used it ever since, (including the sturg in my avatar) the part that went into hammer head is shaped such that it makes a great slip resistant grip area.

As a purchased item for a bonker it might be a little pricey compared to other options.
