Wow! Never even thought of getting tested ! Been tested for food allergy's and found out that i have a lot of food that i should watch out for. Doctor perscribed me EpiPen (Epinephrine Auto-injectors) that i have to carry with me, just in case.

Going to have to request a mercury test on my next doctors appt.

As a fisherman, we handle a lot of lead! should we get tested for lead poisoning ?

Those cabbies and monkeyface are big.  Im in the same boat as you Jim except I don't have any health insurance and don't know when I will see the dr.  Heck, I don't remember the last time I have been to the dr. for a checkup of any kind.  Its been more than 10 years...

As a caveat my daughter eats a lot Gordon's fish sticks and a product called Lemon Swirl with salmon lipids, I requested a mercury test at her last appt and no detectable levels.

Yeah, since I do have health insurance I guess I really have no excuse not to get tested....except that I'm skeered.

Monkeys are herbivorous though so wouldn't think they would bio-accumulate mercury?   :smt002

I used to be pretty skeptical about the amount of Hg in fish and it's health effects.  Then a few years ago a friend asked me to bring him a shark liver.

Long story short, I did some research into Hg levels and the science and the actual effects.

Bottom line, I've gone from a skeptic to one who readily stands by the warnings ESPECIALLY for pregnant women and young children.

In an adult it can interfere with brain function but in a fetus or infant it can interfere with brain development.

Nothing to mess with, everything in moderation is a good rule to live by.

Not trying to be an alarmist but doing reading the studies made a believer out of me.

Here's just a couple sources,

The scary part is that I would have thought the "couple times a week" that batt said he's been eating fist IS IN MODERATION.   :smt009

Rob-

Make an appointment at Open Door Clinic in Arcata.  You can get a physical and your blood tests done and it will be cheaper than I pay per month for health insurance.

But mercury doesn't just "go away." You can't sweat it out by going for a jog... It stays in your system for a very long time. Someone with a high level, like 20ng per ml, could stop eating fish for a year and still test high.
At least the mercury we're consuming in saltwater fish is accumulated naturally...as opposed to the fish in south bay lakes that contain mercury due to runoff from quicksilver mines LOL!

Typically the species to worry about are on higher trophic levels- the 10x rule. With each trophic level (higher up the food chain) there is 10x the amount of toxin as the  lower level.  Also levels in fish in lakes throughout the NW tested high in Hg, the current hypothesis being from coal fired power plants as the distribution is so evenly widespread.

Instead of fishing with anchovies and herring we should be eating them.  :smt005

Understood.  But I still would have thought twice a week was in moderation.  I mean ... various organization recommend eating fish at least twice a week for various health benefits.
