I went on a charter yesterday, they took us just off Stinson/bolinas.  I caught an awesome salmon so I asked the fish whisperer if he thought you could catch them nearer to shore (within paddling distance) and said yes.  Have any of you ever launched off Stinson, or Bolinas area and caught salmon off the yak?  I know how they rigged up with anchovies and it seems to me it would be easy to duplicate off the yak.  Any advice?  Ps.  I never see any yaks out there , so I am wondering if there is some hidden danger I am not aware of (other than great whites :-)

I did just that a couple weeks ago, and I'm heading out again this Saturday. I'll be launching from Bolinas.

If you've got some solid ocean kayaking experience, you should come out!

Also... We're you guys mooching or trolling? Happen to know how deep?

Putting together the game plan for Saturday...

Salmon from yaks!  Crazy talk.   :smt005

Get with Alex if you're ready for the commitment that is offshore kayakfishing.  Good luck.

Guarantee of the day:  You cannot approach catching a salmon from your yak in a half-ass manor and expect to enjoy success.

Thanks guys, I can't make Sat Alex but appreciate the tip.

We were trolling anchovies, barbless hook, wire through the center, some kind of pin through the lower jaw with a rubber band around the head. Fish were 30-40 ft deep although I heard a commercial boat on the radio saying they were catching them bouncing off the bottom.

What size weight do you use when trolling/driving on the yak?  Do you use the fish whistle style release?

Tia

Tia,

I either use a Double Deep 6 (diver) or a 1.5-lb lead weight in a release. There are a variety of options for the sinker release, and they'll all work. The dog whistle style is fine but they don't last very well after getting salted.

You answered you own question.

Stinson, Dux, Pt Reyes, Tomales Pt/Bird - a lot of boaters encounter them along this part of the coastline and most wished that they had a larger boat when they do.

But dude, half-ass is my max speed!

Also, yes the next gws attack on a yak will be at Stinson/Bolinas.

Running a deep six with chovies or something like that is probably your best best.  Check your FF for the bait and drop down about there.  From what I saw up in Humboldt county (non-yak trip) the fish were already moving close to the shore and getting ready to head up the rivers so you're looking for them at a great time.  Best of luck!

Thanks for the doomsday prediction, bud.

If you didn't know already...that area is hella sharky. I was not refering to your guys upcomig trip. I hope nobody ever gets hit by a shark ever again. But that's just wishful thinking.
