Has anyone used a lithium battery to power these units? I have replaced the battery in my motorcycle with a shorai as you get almost twice the amps with half the weight, was wondering if one of these would work for this application.

I was shopping today at Bass Pro in Manteca today and to pick up my order of 3 knife set made by Remington. They were on sale two weeks ago for under ten dollars. They are sweet and will be on my Kayak when I get one. While their, I decided to check out the Lowrance 5 HDI unit. What a beauty of a unit. So easy to operate because of the screens being stretched across the bottom of the front page. So much easier to find the correct screen. I especially like the option to return to a spot and mark as a way point. So many times after drifting over a pentacle and pounding the rock fish trying to find the same pentacle is impossible. This feature is money. I did play with the 7 HDI and its surely a hit. But $200 over the five is a stretch for me but sure would enjoy the larger screen. My question is what is the difference in side scan and down scan? I wish I would of looked to see if any other finder/ sonar unit had the side scan so I could see the difference. Maybe someone here can tell me the difference.

Side scan is just that, it looks left & right to show structure & fish.  You could have been near better structure & never seen it with traditional fish finder.  It is available on Lowrance HDS units.  Similar image as the DSI you played with on the Elite 5 or 7 HDI.  Side scan is not really suited for a kayak since the transducer is about 10-12" long & the structure scan (aka"side scan") module & transducer costs more than the Elite 5 HDI unit.

Feel free to pm me & I can give you a call to discuss.

One other question Bill. I was fishing with John Badger on the Barbarian for Sturgeon. I could actually see the sturgeon image laying in crevices along the bottom. Is this a software holograph imaging program or what? I think he was using a Raymarine or Furuno unit. I'll ask when I see him soon. What other features or upgrades can you purchase with the 5 unit. I watched the video and saw a container which he explained some about a blank card to record your favorite spots and lake info.  I had a Garmin 5 series for salt but would not show details of lakes. They offered a card for lakes only but none were I fish. What were the other cards? Thanks

Looks like West Marine is running a $50 off $300 or more & $20 off $200 or more.  Seems to exclude everything BUT Lowrance.  Ends on Monday, Feb. 10th!

Just saw that posted on westmarine.com site

Sorry for the delay ... missed the post I guess.

The Elite 5 units accept a card for lakes, ocean, etc...  You can also record on a blank & use the 'Insight Genesis' program to create your own personalized maps.  Check out this link for more info!

Mike (wingshooter) was talking about hosting an Insight Genesis class here in the very near future.

As for other upgrades, the Elite series is pretty much stand alone.  Got to go up to the HDS series before the list of upgrades becomes long & fulfilling with everything from structure scan, music, forward looking sonar, etc...

Your not talking the Gen 1 HDS are you?  I dont think mine has forward looking sonar or music, but then again there is still too much for me to learn on it.

Those upgrades are for Gen 2 HDS series using Sonar Hub & Sonic Hub.  Insight Genesis works with Gen 2.

Yes your Shorai will work.  I used mine last weekend for over 10 hours fishing. There is a warning in the instructions to not allow it to discharge below 13 volts & mine was at 13.1 so I recommend charging everyday of use.

I'm thinking about picking up the Elite 4 HDI. Does anyone know if the transducer will fit in the Lowrance Ready Plate on a 2014 revo13?
