. There WILL be a fatal attack on a kayaker and it WILL happen on the SMC first.
Scott,
You are a very respected member of the community, I DONT like your prediction, I've fished and continually fish SMC until I depart to PI. this is an ILL will prediction, I dont mean no disrespect but please dont wish this to happen to anyone neither NCKA nor other yakkers in SMC. I've been fishing this shore for 8 years now hopefully till I rest it will remain 0 GWS fatality.

Thanks you!

In 8 languages. In case the shark don't speak English. Might be a Mexican.

Dangers of playing in the outdoors. Sharks and bears. Don't want the risk, stay at home.

I have never like reading this "prediction".
It has zero relevance in the grand scheme of things.
I might as well predict that someone is going to die from choking on a cigarette butt.
Am I going to have a "See, I told you" moment it if happens?
Here are some more causes of fatalities, all occur far greater than GSW attacks.

Sorry Mike, have to disagree with you on this one. Increasing frequency and severity of attacks points to only one conclusion. The conditions you listed aren't entirely preventable. Choosing where you fish is entirely your choice. Just saying it is a whole different issue. We all know someone is going die from a shark attack at this point. Let's not try to trivialize it with the lightning strike argument. it's become an annual event if not more. Even us in the business of death and disease can see the writing on the wall.

I keep the camera ready, and I try to always keep myself ready for an extreme change of status.

The more we continue to prepare ourselves, the more likely we'll avoid having a fatality.

Well said Eric.
Just for S&G I check GE and looks like there is a 13' fish off of HMB, out 30 miles or so. Likely not our hungry yak eating friend though.

There is one or more large resident white sharks in the Bean Hollow area for the last few years. They have become habituated to kayakers and their attacks have become more aggressive over time. Compare Dan's attack to Adam's attack. No one can argue that Adam's attack was the most aggressive to date. The lesson learned is that eventually they will not stop with a first second or third attack and go away and eventually they will figure out there is a small meal on those plastic boats. I only say this because that is what has happened to divers and surfers. The landlord is smarter than you think. If you keep paddling his turf, he will eventually make you pay. I am glad you made it without any problems and wish you safe travels to the PI, but for all you crazy beaners, I have to question why rockfish, lingcod and halibut are worth the risk. In fact, I believe I can catch the same quality of fish out of HMB if I chose to seriously target them. Yeah I miss fishing the bean but the lighting strike argument just doesn't hold water anymore.

As predicted by many vets long ago, as there are more kayakers on the SMC the frequency of shark attacks will increase. I'd also say from my experience that for every shark attack/encounter out there that is publicized there is one that is not, not everyone is NCKA.

I don't believe in telling people not to go out there, I tell them my personal experiences and let them research themselves. They can make their own decisions. I will say, seriously think about posting public hookups on the SMC, the reasons are obvious.

I have roughly 50 days out there and 4% of the time I've been out the landlord has come to collect + I have an image of the shark launching a kayaker like a rag doll burned in my brain.

And yes, most locals who live out there believe there are resident sharks out there.

Scott,
Thanks for the well wishes, and sorry for the thread jack, anyway, there are 1000 ways to die (SPIKE TV), if we let fear take our passion away from us then whats the point of living, for me when its your time its your time. You are right there are plenty of places to fish, but IMHO like I said if its your time your time does it really matter? If theres OCEAN there is shark period. knowing the risk and understanding safety first will help you prepare. If it hits the fan prepare for the worse.

C'mon dude.  If its your time, its your time...I agree to a certain extent.  There are situations that are totally out of our control, yes.  But there are also ways a person can sway the odds of if something bad will happen to us.  This weekend the temperature will be in the high 90's in much of the Bay Area.  Am I going to take an evening stroll down Seminary Ave in Oakland with my girl?  No.  I know there are predators in the area and I'm going to avoid them by not going for a walk there.  I'll stick to my neighborhood instead.  Sure there is a possibility of a predator causing harm to me in my neighborhood, but far less than in East Oakland.  Its a simple fact.  I can change my odds by making a decision where to take that evening walk.  Wouldn't you guys agree that same applies to fishing the San Mateo coast versus fishing the Sonoma coast?  Of course if its meant to happen, it will.  Buy why tempt fate?  Let a sleeping dog lie.  You won't catch me giving anyone shit about fishing in dangerous areas, we're all adults and are free to make our own decisions.  But I'm not going to say that a giant fish with a mouth full of razor sharp teeth shooting out from the depths have a pretty small chance at killing a guy sitting on a small plastic boat.  I've seen people bleed to death, first hand, in the middle of cities just a handful of miles from trauma centers from lacerations to arteries.  Now imagine that out on the water.  The danger is real, know what you are getting into and be at peace with the fact that where you decide to fish will increase your chance at getting you killed than if you were to fish at another location.  I certainly hope it never happens, but at the rate we are moving, the trend is leading toward a tragedy.  Lets be realistic about this.
