Having grown up surfing, fishing, and talking with the local commercial fishers, GW have always been there.  Its just a part of being otw.  You can either deal with it or let it drive you off the water.  That being said, not sure how I would deal with the mayor taking a taste of my yak.  I'll be on the water tomorrow just the same though :smt003

Looks like the GWS crowd has definitely developed a a taste for NorCal kayaks. Looks like it ended well as in  he and the kayak made it back to shore and there are no injuries reported
Seriously, let us all remember what should be the official NCKA rules for GWS attacks.

1. Support our brother, and wish him or her well.

2. Be very careful what we say on this forum as far as what the kayak's real name is, where they might live and contact information. Remember the media can be a beast worse than a GWS.

3. See rule #2. Give him time to tell family members in his own way. Let the kayaker decide for themselves how they want to deal with the surrounding publicity. After all it happened to them, not you.

We all fish the red triangle and are in play every time we fish. However, Some places are sharkier within the triangle than others. SMC is the epicenter of shark attacks because of the seals and kayak activity. The sharks of SMC have have habituated to kayaks because of the number of kayakers. There WILL be a fatal attack on a kayaker and it WILL happen on the SMC first. This is not trying to scare folks, but to make sure you understand the risk you are undertaking. HMB is the only safe location on the SMC but even HMB is not entirely safe.

This is the kind of crap that keeps me in fresh water, then again I am old and juicy.

I have seen folks paint the underside of their yaks to NOT mimic a tasty animal, is there anything (short of staying in the murky green) that helps sharks choose other snacks?

I have a deep and abiding love of kelp, but usually from under the water, where sharks can see you and generally don't bother you if you are not bleeding..
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

Exactly.  Keep rolling the dice, and your number will come up eventually.  Sorry, but thats the truth.

I have never like reading this "prediction".
It has zero relevance in the grand scheme of things.
I might as well predict that someone is going to die from choking on a cigarette butt.
Am I going to have a "See, I told you" moment it if happens?
Here are some more causes of fatalities, all occur far greater than GSW attacks.

I still think its not a bad idea to tow around a silhouette of a seal/sealion. If there's a hungry shark closeby, I'd rather see it attack the fake seal behind me. I'd rather be the "dodger" and not the hoochie, if you know what I mean.

I'm not sure of the basis of that comment Scott or whether that was sarcasm. I believe people thought the same about Capitola.  I have friends who are SMC park rangers and I know the Harbor Master. They tell me of seeing GWS munching on carcasses right outside the harbor.
Given the fact that we have had attacks five of the last six years.  I would agree that the SMC may be the first location for a significant injury or death of a kayak fisherman by a GWS. Given that they instinctively hit the stern and bow, the chances of one hitting our center area and hitting it while we have a foot in the water are pretty small.
IMHO the real danger lies in fishing alone and not being prepared for immersion and self-rescue. Hypothermia whether it is from a beast knocking you into the water or from human error or weather conditions will I believe be the cause of our first fatality.

Craig  posted a pic of a guy who painted a seal on the bottom of his yak with the caption " bite me." Quite frankly, this is serious s**t on the SMC and if you bring that down to SMC, you can fish by yourself. Believe me, taunting the the landlord is a bad idea. Our only hope is to respect the master and do whatever we can to avoid confrontation.
