Dood, Jim! Your killing me with that sh-t.
As for my screen name, I'm a Frank Zappa fan, and from the live at the Filmore East album there was the story of the mudshark, where rumor has it,it's about Led Zeppelin, who partied at the edgewater inn in Seattle.
It's a inn built on a pier and you can rent rods and fish out of your windows in your room. Well at the party Led zeppelin and peeps with the bad did unspeakable things involving mudsharks and groupies.

Herb's the name. Would like to keep it easy to remember. It's already hard to keep up with handles/names in this group in addition to new members joining.

Grandma found this amazing place in the Sierra foothills in 1970. Been in the family ever since. Had a lot of good times there growing up. Still go whenever I can find the time.

I am a native-born Kiwi (born in New Zealand, came to the US as a child, of English/French decent).

Hence my screen name, Pakeha Cherie....... "Pakeha" is a Maori term for "indigenous New Zealander of non-Maori and non-Polynesian heritage". Basically it means I am a white New Zealander, LOL.

However, I found this a while back, and thought it was pretty cool and quite fitting....although there is great speculation as to where the word "Pakeha" came from, this is an excerpt from a paper by Jodie Ranford:

"In 1894 Hoani Nahe suggested that ‘Pakeha’ could be an abbreviation of ‘Paakehakeha’, gods of the ocean who had the forms of fish and man (Biggs, 1988).

It is said that Nahe’s version was in response to Bishop W.L. Williams’ comment that ‘Pakeha’ seemed to be an abbreviation of Pakepakeha. This theory is supported firstly by the idea that white people, like the Paakehakeha, came from the sea, and secondly because the word ‘Paakehakeha’ contains a reduplication of the maori word ‘keha’ meaning ‘pale’ (The word ‘pakeha’: where it comes from, what it means, 1988).

The ‘Pakepakeha’ are also linked to ‘Patupaiarehe’ by their fair skin and hair. The ‘Patupaiarehe’ had fair skin and beautiful voices, and gave people the secret of fishing with nets.
These creatures’ possess canoes made of reeds, which can change magically into sailing vessels. The ‘Patupaiarehe’ can also be linked to Nahe’s version of Pakeha as an abbreviation of ‘Paakehakeha’, gods of the ocean who had the forms of fish and man (Biggs, 1988).

Paakehakeha

Gods of the ocean who had the forms of fish and man

Patupaiarehe

Beings with fair skin and hair who gave people the secret of fishing with nets

Pakepakeha

Mythical, human like being, with fair skin and hair who possessed canoes made of reeds which changed magically into sailing vessels

Pakeha

Originally referring to the early European settlers of New Zealand

When I first started to get into kayaking, I was on east coast and Texas forums to get info and ideas. I came up with Caliyak to rep the west coast.

Was a nickname given to me by my best friends girlfriend as a teenager. He got all jealous about it and dumped her, so naturally I had to keep it just to piss him off. Somehow he is still my best friend.
