So we had a conversation regarding DFG's definition of Bag and Posssion Limit during GS7 and there was some level of confusion. On the 2013-14 DFG regulation handbook, it states that the daily bag limit is "10 fish in combination per person (except cabezon: 3 and Bocaccio: 3)". However, in the definitions section of this same handbook, it also defines Bag and Possion Limit as the same thing: "No more than one daily bag limit of each kind of fish, amphibian, retile, mollusk or crustacean named in these regulations may be taken or possessed by any one person unless otherwise authorized; regardless of whether they are fresh, frozen, or otherwise preserved."

So for those of us who fished multiple days at GS7, did this mean that if a Game Warden came by and checked our coolers and if we had more than 10 fish per person, we would be screwed? For those who caught their limit in RF or Lings/Cabbies on Friday, would this have disqualified them from the tournament on Saturday? Of course you could eat your fish and gift it to others...

In theory, yes.

Also, I personally was sightly embarrassed by the number of on-the-water questions regarding take limits of species, size limits on species, and identification of species.  Guys, please know your regulations before you get on the water.

You can possess 10 rockfish.  Period.  Even if they are at home in the freezer.  The answer is to gift them to friends or family if you want to keep that many fish.  I personally never fish for a limit but I live on the ocean and can understand wanting to stock up if you live inland

That was painful.  Definately didn't make us look good.

When in doubt throw it back!

I fished multiple days, but at the end of it all I only came home with 2 lings and maybe 4 rockies.

I would not have been surprised to have DFW checking vehicles leaving for abalone, so I wanted to be sure I was in compliance.

Possession limit applies to your freezer at home too.

Yes

That is a whole 'nother can o worms. And a good question. I'm surprised it never came up before.

I only ask this question because there were a good number of lings that were brought in every day we were there. Hopefully they were gifted and/or eaten before going out for more the next day. It would be quite embarrasing if the DFG checked our coolers and some of us were out of compliance.

I left with one Cab and one Ling after five days of catching fish. Had some left over from last year and saw no need for more. The ones I took are being gifted. I made a donation to the taco shack though. 2 lings and 4 rockfish.

+1  that kinda sucked...."How big does a ling have to be?" "how many can i keep?" and my personal Favorite "What Happens if i Catch a red one"-Hopefully a Joke

Guys should really know this. If you dont you shouldn't be out there, or release anything and everything you catch. I know its not always fun abiding by the rules. Which is why Yellow eyes are so delicious.(joke) There are a few Rules you should know for RF too keep you out of trouble. One of the fairly Overlooked rules is that you MUST HAVE A NET WHEN ROCKFISHING. to b e in Compliance with the law.

Have fun, be safe, stay outta trouble. You cant afford it  :smt002

Neither can NCKA or Gimme Shelter tournaments.
Your actions as  individuals can impact the entire group.

I would hate for anyone to be scared of asking a question though (I had to have help with a verm ID once years ago)

I have only heard of the possession limit being enforced in a home freezer for abalone. I don't freeze rockfish and never take more then 4 rockfish a day so don't have to worry. Salmon and seabass are harder to stay in the regs so I give it away so I don't have to worry. Of course if you home can your salmon, it would be difficult to say how many jars constitute 1 fish. Just saying... :smt005

I do what Yakhopper told me to do and I have the identification sheet out of the DFG regulations labeled for size and limits of every species and then I laminated it, and keep it on the yak with me. Helps out a lot.

...Or available for immediate use... the boat next to you???
here's the rule...
No person shall take finfish from any boat or other floating device in ocean waters
without having a landing net in possession or available for immediate use to assist in landing undersize fish of species having minimum size limits;
