So for those of us who fished multiple days at GS7, did this mean that if a Game Warden came by and checked our coolers and if we had more than 10 fish per person, we would be screwed?

In theory, yes.

Also, I personally was sightly embarrassed by the number of on-the-water questions regarding take limits of species, size limits on species, and identification of species.  Guys, please know your regulations before you get on the water.

I wasn't slightly embarrassed.....I was pissed.  How dare people go fishing in waters when they don't know the regs. There is NO excuse.

That was painful.  Definately didn't make us look good.

When in doubt throw it back!

+1  that kinda sucked...."How big does a ling have to be?" "how many can i keep?" and my personal Favorite "What Happens if i Catch a red one"-Hopefully a Joke

Guys should really know this. If you dont you shouldn't be out there, or release anything and everything you catch.

+1. Yes, that was very embarrassing.

it is embarrassing but some people just never caught a certain species before and needs some clarification. I've caught my share of rock fish so it's easy for me to distinguish between a verm/yellow eye/canary. People would see them in pictures online but when your out there catching fish they're pretty damn different look some times than the pics. The regs in the handbook are somewhat confusing sometimes also. I'm just glad people call in over the radio instead of keeping something illegal. Just my 2 cents

I have only heard of the possession limit being enforced in a home freezer for abalone.

Last year in bodega bay dfg was checking rv's and ice chests at the campgrounds, word is that many tickets for over possession of limits were issues.

Come to think of it, I had my ice chest searched at reef campground when dfg seen my dive gear out drying on the picnic table.

I only had one ab prepped for dinner and the shell was tagged so everything was in order.

What is confusing is the fact that the regulation uses the term "Daily Bag Limit" in one section and then says that it means the same as "Possession Limit" in another section. If these two terms mean the same thing in the regulation booklet, then why not just use one term (i.e. "Possession Limit") throughout? It almost seems to me like it's a trap for more naive anglers.

A simple anolgy I can thing of is - if you were driving down the freeway and the sign says speed limit is 65mph but then you get pulled over by and ticketed because the cop tells you 65MPH really means 55mph in another section of the rule book.

If the purpose of the regulation book is for people to follow the rules within, then shouldn't they at least attempt to make it a bit more clear?

I'm just saying because when we discussed this topic, I got so many different answers from different folks, and a good number of them was wrong.

Because in the freshwater regs some waters and species have possession limits that are double the daily bag limit. Eagle Lake comes to mind.

All good questions.
They have different Bag and Possession limits for certain fish. Like brook trout in certain areas of CA...where the daily bag limit is 5, but you can have 10 in possession.

One thing to note is that there are two separate DFG regulation handbooks - one for Fresh Water Sport Fishing and another one for Ocean Sport fishing. Why cross over the terms if each handbook stand on its own? Is there a lawyer on the board who can chime in?

They haven't always been separate books. All the dfg regulations are found in title 14 of the California code of regulations. In the same title, generally speaking, words are defined once and are used to mean the same thing throughout.

The terms don't crossover- they mean the same thing in both booklets.

does this mean if I have two salmon in my freezer i can give them to my 7 year old daughter and bring home two more then give them to my wife and the next day go out and get two more and give them to my girlfriend then go out the next day and get two for myself?

What i'm asking is if I have a wife or girlfriend does that mean I can have 4 salmon in OUR FREEZER.  And if my wife's girlfriend lives with us can we have sex, i mean six.

If you are not very familiar with the species, carry an ID card such as can be found here: http://rockfishid.com/JohnPRODUCT.html#FoldingGuide Many stores carry them or you can purchase them online. Maybe they should be required to participate-you have to present your copy at check-in to get your catch measured...

There are also some more ID pages on the DFG Website here for further study and there is a quiz: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/fishid.asp

If you need help with ID or limits (we should know this stuff before launching, tho) while on the water, hail someone over, do not broadcast it on the radio. It makes us look unprepared, lax about compliance and dumb.

Thou shalt not have sex with your wife's boyfriend.  But all the rest above sounds good.

I think I read somewhere last year that a game warden cited an angler for over possession of fish in one of the camp sites in NorCal, but the fella indicated that he gifted the extra fish to his GF and the Game Warden wouldn't accept it because his GF didn't have a fishing license. Not sure if this was true or not, but I wouldn't be surprised because some of those Game Wardens can be Ahulls.  :smt005
