I think the hull design would come into play far more on the ocean then on a lake. The advantage would go much farther toward sleek V hull yaks with paddles...on clear waters and lake fishing (most of what I do) the mirage drive is at its best and in its environment.

I use the mirage drive for eating up large chunks of miles, or trolling to fishy spots.
Once at "the spot" I break out the paddle for more control as I slowly work the smaller area. :smt001

OK guys.  No excuse now.  Salmon are out there, halibut arre biting in the bay, stripers on their way down from the delta, and rockfish season open below Pigeon Point.

six pages of bickering not necessary, winter is OVER!!

I think the overall race paddle vs peddle is a draw when it comes to speed and endurance.

The advantage of the peddle would be seen in a race of 2 evenly matched Yakers  from point A to point B where each participant is required to set up 2 complete rigs during the race. Hands free movement FTW.

Hence why I own an Outback.   :smt006

This has been a good topic with multiple viewpoints dealing with speed and efficiency of peddle and paddle. A couple points: A skilled paddler uses torso, shoulders, and arms to propel his craft thus it is not an arm versus leg contest with the Mirage drive.  Narrow non pedal yaks have glide between strokes. Forward momentum continues without a constant paddle stroke and allows recovery for the human engine. Without glide pedal yaks require constant power outputs to maintain higher speeds and over a long distance, say twenty miles, the "motor" will run out of energy sooner.

"Motors" differ so the best comparison would be an individual time trial using two sleek equivalent hulls,  one equipped with pedal drive the other with paddle and see what one's personal results would be.

Great thread, looked like it was turning into a train wreck but seems to be coming back around.  :smt002

For what it's worth, I fish quite a bit with JBaker.  He has a Revo, I have a Quest.  The Revo is basically a Quest with a Mirage Drive system, so at least now were talking apples to apples.  He and I are about the same size, carry about the same amount of gear, and we've fished ocean and lakes side by side.  5 miles, 10 miles, 15 miles of trolling, we can both just keep jamming.  In a flat out drag race, he can whup me.

To me the best option is to keep a fleet of yaks, and choose the right one for the day!

Refilling the gas tank while the motor is running is fairly easy while pedaling....

the glide question we keep comparing different kayak designs....i know the adventure slides pretty well along-- better than my old prowler, dolphin, or scupper.
I can pedal at a faster pace for way way longer than i have ever been able to paddle.

Of course, I've got arms like a fly, and even with my best paddling technique eventually those fly arms wear out.

My legs of course...well...they've just had far too long of endurance bashing...so as soon as they get what's up...they settle down into the long haul.
I've found that my "indefinite tempo" pace is 4mph on typical bay water in the full-AI, and is about equivalent to a 3-4% grade and low tempo HR.
Kinda like this: http://app.strava.com/activities/111659#1175532 but without lead up.

Hey Steve

Thought I'd PM you rather than add to the thread. Looks like both of us have a biking background so we share an understanding of endurance events and what it takes to maintain a higher end speed for long distance. I think if we compare the Adventure, which I also own and consider the fastest pedal yak, with a very fast sea kayak hull the effort to propel the sea kayak will be less over long distance especially in following and cross seas. The guy in Australia I mentioned was pressed to keep up on 30 mile legs of their two week open ocean trek on his Adventure. Only in headwinds was his efficiency superior to the sea kayaks and keeping pace was easy.

I brought the Adventure mainly for hands free fishing and being able to maintain position offshore while jigging into wind and current and wanting something that would move nicely along.

I ordered the old style solid drive cranks from Hobie that were threaded left and right for bike pedals. I grabbed an old set of shoes and mtb pedals and screwed them in and went down to the Russian River near my place for a two hour test. Very pleased! Not quite the benefit of clip ins on the bike since  full circle cranking on the Hobie isn't possible but it was easier to maintain upper level cruise speeds. Pretty sure I'll like them even more in the salt.

The fastest pedal craft I know of were designed by an Australian engineer named Rick Willoughby for distance racing on the Murry River. He uses a 12 inch by 20 foot main hull with outriggers and a full bike crank setup with a flexible steel cable drive and free swiming prop. In 2008 an endurance guy named Greg Kolodzizyk sp? used Rick's design and set a 24 hour record of 151 miles doing continuous laps on a lake. Previous record was around ten miles less by Carter Johnson on a surf ski. So pedal power of the right sort can compete race wise with the fastest paddle craft.

Thanks for your comments and links to your biking world.
