For as long as I can remember, the bad mojo bananas bring to fishing have hold true.  I have been out on a number of fishing trips where our bait hadn't been touched only to find out that the new guy on the trip had packed a banana in his lunch.  Sometimes the second the banana is thrown overboard we started catching fish.  So you can say I am a firm believer in this myth.  This last crab season opener in Bodega, Sailfish went out with us for some rockfish and he pulled out a banana from his lunch and we debated the superstition, Sonny being a non-believer and in his defense I know he has caught alot of fish!
To make a long story short, we didn't catch any fish that day.

I came across this article today on BD and thought I would share it everybody and see what your opinions are.

Here is the link to the article on Bloody Decks.

I had never heard of this before, but it makes as much sense as any of my superstitions, so more power to ya.  The article lists some possible reasons for the belief, and the one about overloaded boats makes sense.  Interestingly... if you read down into the comments left by readers, one guy points out that banana release high amount of ethylene gas which promotes the ripening, and eventual spoiling of otherwise long keeping fruits and veggies.  I could see that as a legitimate reason why bananas became a no no at sea pre-refridgeration.

I don't by into that! I eat and take bananas all the time, crap wait a minute, I don't catch $hit!!!!! :smt044  Seriously, when I had my P/B, I had bananas on board most of the time, so I'm not worried about them. I always heard the story about how bananas carried deadly spiders and people on boats would get bit and die.

What are you talking about. I heard bananas were good luck.
After Rob took 1st in the FreshKats series I bought him some banana scented bait dip which I haven't givin' to him yet.
Just a way to say congrats and good luck in 2013. I'll make sure to throw it in his boat at the Black Butte tourney.  :smt006

Most of the time I have a banana in my lunch and always catch as many or more fish than those who are catching fish .

Last time out on a " pot luck " boat I  had 2 bananas and a few old farts found out and threatened to throw me and said bananas overboard .  :smt044 All talk and no action , lucky me ! 2 hours later I have a striper and 3 halibut , any of them would take the jackpot and guess who (s) wants to buy my other banana .  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

I may have superstitions, but banana aren't among them :smt002.
Mostly I usually don't bring bananas out on the kayak with me because I don't like the bit of salt that always seems to go with whatever snack I have packed. I've gone to Mojo bars since they are already salty :smt044

Ha ha, very funny. I'm not superstitious, and I don't like bananas. I will give that bait a try Mike. Lets see what happens.

one guy points out that banana release high amount of ethylene gas which promotes the ripening, and eventual spoiling of otherwise long keeping fruits and veggies.
Bananas don't emit ethylene gas. Bananas are exposed to ethylene gas to accelerate ripening.
