Ethylene gas is a hormone that plants produce to accelerate ripening... Lots of fruits and veggies emit it... some more than others.  The link I provided is from a banana distributor... I assume they know what they are talking about.  I could be wrong...

Many years ago, I took a party boat out of Pillar Point for Rock fishing. Nobody told me I had to provide my own bait, and I had none.

An old guy tossed me his banana peel, and told to cut strips and use them for bait.

Actually, we're both right. The gas is also applied externally to hasten the ripening process.

I still think is a bit of an old wives tales anyway.  I'm pretty sure some other fruits produce it in higher concentrations, but are less sensitive to it as well.  In the end, the bananas are actually being spoiled by the other fruits, not the other way around... but, the confusion is understandable when you see how nasty rotten bananas get.

I have heard stories in the past of big lings being caught on strange stuff.  Big lings don't have much to worry about in the comfort zone of their ecosystem, leading to them being somewhat fearless and naturally inquisitive.  Perhaps inquisitive is the wrong word... hyper aggressive maybe?  Anyway... they seem to go out off their way to check out things that would seem to be unusual to them.

+1, My freezer always has a few black bananas in it, waiting to be turned into bread some chilly morning or afternoon.  Chocolate chips tossed into the batter is a delicious variation.

Yes sir. You are correct. That is why most produce you buy in the store has very little nutritional value. It is picked before it is ripe, which means it never absorbed all the nutrients it should have. Then it is shipped from who knows where to the groceries warehouse. Exposed to the gas. Then shipped to your local store so it looks ripe. Artificial ripening like this means the fruit has very little nutrients in it. The only way to get decent nutritional value from fruits and vegetables is to buy at a local farmers market when it was picked ripe that day. Organics means nothing as far as nutrition in most cases also. It just was not exposed to chemical fertilizer or pesticide.

Well one captain almost threw my son over board because he had a banana. As far as the gas many people will use a couple Banana's with Avocados to ripen them faster. Try it and see, then if you don't know the seed in the guacamole keeps it from turning brown. Works better than lemon.   

The fruit does produce gas naturally also. That is why to ripen it fast they use the gas.

+1  Bananas are a great carb to eat OTW to keep your paddling/pedaling energy up.
Just don't throw the peels inside the hull & forget about them.   

Mooch only has to worry about pig's heads in the hatch.
