James, I am not sure where I will end up - depends on where the salmon are close to shore.

I just have a Mazda economy car, only one yak fits on it.  But if you have a truck and wanna drive, sure, let's see where we wanna go on Friday.  Thanks!!

Can't wait til the weekend!

regarding "3 miles out", I'm not sure that 3 miles out from LM is actually deeper than 180,  so I don't think
you'd necessarily get a ticket for rockfish in waters deeper than 180. might be close, I didn't measure my chart.

it's pretty shallow off the coast from LM to the golden gate.
It gets deep more quickly off montara tho.

But the real issue with rockfish first is that it's late before you even get to paddling out for salmon.  It takes longer
to fish for rockfish than one might think.

Seems like going for salmon and then 'mooching' on the bottom the last of your anchovies on the way in to try
to get the skunk off iis the more feasible plan.

I don't know, fishing for anything is hard enough, the combo idea sounds tough.

I am still waiting for the weather to sort itself out before I figure where I'm going to fish.   :smt017

I looked this AM. (West SC) It's a lake today. Lazy 3' swell and smooth as a baby's bot-
tle.

Sat. I might hit davenport... or pigeon pt. if someone will join me.

James, thanks and I am in East bay too - Oakland.  There's 3 Craigs here now...  yikes!  me, h, and builder.  as far as I know.

J, yeah you are right - the timing is an issue. I would want to be on salmon grounds by like 9am.  If I rockfished first, I'd allow 6am - 8am, something like that.  Just get what i could, then find out where the closest salmon bite is via radio, and paddle there.  Could always stop on the way back for more rockfish with a barbless hook.

I just wanna use the full arsenal for RF first.  But yeah, once RF on board, can't go farther out than the 30 fathom curve - that is right.  I'm just gonna watch the reports and see where the closest salmon are, and likely go there.

Hope I can find someone to fish the combo with, too!   :smt006

Thanks for the well-put advice!

vanim, what do you think about fog?  I don't like being socked in and having boats fly by me when out of davenport. they often run
up and down pretty close to shore, right in the fishing zone. fog is always worse north of town. I don't have a good way to predict
the fog in north county yet. waves and wind, I'm okay, but not fog.

In some ways, you could save the up-north spots and just fish santa cruz on the opener, I mean that is the time to fish it, before it's
fished out. From the reports, people have caught plenty fish in town recently.  The south swell might hurt the nearshore bite tho.

I might surf first (cause a south swell is forecast), then strap a crate to the nose of a longboard and paddle out to try
for few rockfish later, maybe do this at 4 or 3 mile. I just have no clue yet.  :smt017

Troy - I plan on meeting Bob at about 5:45AM at his house in Windsor. We could meet you between 6:15 and 6:30 at the PGE plant on River Road. You just take 101 north, exit at River Road and go west over the freeway and you'll see the big power plant there. That's where we usually meet our buddy from the south bay.

I'll PM you my cell number.

As far as weaponry - we usually fish 5", 7" or 9" plastics (either Fishtraps, Fatbaits, etc or curly tail grubs) on 4oz, 6oz, or 8oz leadheads. 6oz is a good all around weight, but I bring a variety of weights. Diamond jigs work, too.

There is a thread in one of the other boards called "ling baits" that has some good info in it.

In Loving Memory of Mooch, Eelmaster, Shicken, and Cabeza De Martillo

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

Looks like swell's starting up again Saturday lunch time. You all be careful out there and remember no fish is worth getting in a rut for.

By the way, tell me where the good pinnacles are and every last one of your GPS numbers!

Looks like I'll launch the powerboat at Tomales, slam the salmon, return the fish and tacke to the dock and then go back out for rockies.  If the forecast looks like the power boat is a no-go, then we'll put the yaks in at Salt Point and jig the rockies.
