maybe HMB or maybe Linda Mar....I'm leaning towards LM cause the salmon maybe in by then. A rockfish/salmon combo is the ticket  :smt002

I just have to make sure I don't have a salmon on board - together with rockfish cause DFG might raise a flag :smt011

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

You certainly do not want to have any rods with barbed hooks rigged if you have a salmon on board.....That sounds like an expensive ticket.

If your gonna do a combo trip, you best fish rockfish with barbless circle hooks.

I may not have a yak for the opener though.....  I already got a couple of replies to my Craigslist ad for "Ripple".

I have successfully caught lings and rockfish with barbless circle hooks.  It was an experiment when I was more into fishing than catching.
Saltwater is the cure for everything that ails us,
sweat, tear or the sea.

You have two options with the rockfish/salmon combo...

1.) fish for salmon first and then fish for rockfish with barbless hooks (probably circle hooks if you're using bait (anchovies) for the rockfish.

2.) fish for rockfish first and then switch to barbless hooks for salmon but don't get fishing in waters deeper than 180' with rockfish on board.

I believe that most people do the first option.

I would have thought Brian's #2 order would work best.  Maybe my logic is flawed - I am newer at this than many of you.

I'll be rockfishing near bottom...  So, no salmon caught while rockfishing.  Load up on a bag of rockfish... then move offshore to fish for salmon with barbless hooks.  If DFG stops by the yak when i am 4 miles out going for salmon with a bag of RF on board, the rigs will all be barbless then... no harm no foul.

Not sure why you'd try for salmon first, for however long until you might catch one, then if so, be limited to barbless hooks after switching over to rockfish....  Sure it can be done, but why force oneself into it?

There must be a good reason that I am missing.    :smt100

I'm no expert either, but your best shot at salmon seems to be starting early and covering lots of ground.  By doing this early and getting it out of the way, you can then target RF at reef on the way back in.  Also salmon tend to be deeper than the 120' RF limit.

If the salmon come to LM like they did in 2004, you will have the perfect opportunity to test your method.   :smt001

For those that missed the memo, the rockfish depth limit this year is 180', so enjoy the extra 10 fathoms of depth.

As for DFG stopping someone with a bag full of rockfish 3 miles out trying for salmon... they can (and most likely will) give you a citation even if you're using barbless hooks.  So be careful.

Hey Troy - I usually meet Bob in Windsor between 5:00 and 5:30AM. Then it's another 1hr 20min drive to Fort Ross. If you can make it up here by then you're more than welcome to follow us up to Da Fort.

In Loving Memory of Mooch, Eelmaster, Shicken, and Cabeza De Martillo

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...
