The record attendance for a kayak fishing tournament on the west coast was 200 for the Steve Moyer in 2006. Since then attendance has declined and in 2012 it was cancelled. This makes GS the largest kayak tourney on the west coast and maybe the US. What is truly remarkable is that the participants drive on average probably 5 hours to get there unlike La Jolla. However, even with sky high gas prices, way cheaper than Alaska. A real tribute to Eric and NCkA. It is going to be EPIC!

Team Jackson will be there - the "Pros", Jim Sammons and Drew Gregory, have elected to accept a sponsor's exemption / free entry in the tournament, but they can't win any prizes.  Other team members Dan Arbuckle, whose Headwaters Kayak Shop is sponsoring along with Jackson, and Sean White are entering the good old fashioned way and are eligible for all but the grand prize.

EDIT:  See page 33 - no late entries will be accepted, and all valid entries are eligible for all prizes.

Wow we got the "Legend" Jim Sammons to come up to our gathering! Been a fan of his for a long time and always wanted to meet him in person, should be great. Watch out we may end up on the Kayak Fishing show then everyone will be coming up to Shelter Cove which would bring a lot more money to the area! Can't wait!

Amazing!  Will everyone fit on that strip of concrete in front of the Tides?  I sure hope we don't get rain at the potluck.  We could break the world record for the number of people in a garage.

Good question Jim.  Eric, is he bringing the film crew?

You know what, I just corresponded with Jim for the first time about the tournament yesterday, and, obviously, he's not here in this thread.  Right now I feel that he will need to fit into the culture of the tournament.  Ironically, I am pretty involved with some level of video production myself...   :smt003  When GS was gaining steam and I was also building some level of volume in my own video adventures, there was a time when I would meet people at the tournament and I could feel the potential apprehension or maybe just a general awareness, and sometimes even an eagerness, of being around me and that I might pull out a camera at any time!  I have always done my very best to respect that and have actually filmed less during GS events than I would usually.  Long story short, I feel that Jim is a guest - a special guest - who we should be glad to welcome to our gathering, and I intend on doing that.  I will appreciate the communty's support in making sure that we impart the message that this gathering is so far from a commercial event that we have no time for such things!  Filming a show requires much planning, and the most important part of that planning is engaging the people who you want to film with, so I hope Jim will at least warn me if he plans on capturing footage for his show.  Jim, you out there?  Welcome to GS - glad to have you.   :smt001
