Team Jackson will be there - the "Pros", Jim Sammons and Drew Gregory, have elected to accept a sponsor's exemption...

Jim who?  Isn't that the guy who had a successful golfing career until he found kayaking?

"Page 33 info..."

This map shows our primary fishing area at the Cove.  It's a very good idea to locate such a map online, study it, and obtain a copy if possible.  This map could easily make the difference between a good day or a bad one, and it could at least factor in to how NOT to lose salmon gear around the reef.  The green Bell buoy is about a mile SSE of the launch, and the red Whistle buoy is about a mile WSW of the Bell.  My old man fished there commercially out of a dory for a short stint in the 70's.  Being pre-electronics, he said they always used to score whatever they were after "between the Bell and the Whistle."  Words to fish by.   :smt001

I've used a 'spraypaint' swath of yellow to show typical routes for those who seek rockfish and lingcod.  Opportunities for nice fish start right after leaving the harbor.  Farther north of the area shown on this map there are more nice reef structures, but most of the fishing does take place within the area shown here.

I used a blue spray to show areas where I've caught salmon while trolling.  The typical powerboat trolling area is just outside the red Whistle buoy - that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of salmon inside on the reef - it's just easier to lose gear in there.

I've used red to show where I do NOT want people to fish.  It seems that every year someone fishes in too close in front and gets tossed by a set wave.  Most would agree that the bite and the potential for more and bigger fish is better outside the shallows anyway...  Please don't be this year's statistic by getting thrown off your yak due to fishing in too close.

As for halibut, there have been plenty of halibut hooked inside the area shown here - that's Pacific Halibut.  Mine came from a bit farther west of the Whistle than is shown here, but the biggest GS weekend halibut to date came inside the Whistle a ways...  Dream about it, consider what you need in order to have a chance at it, visualize it, seek out chances at it, and prepare yourself to experience it.   :smt001

Mine came on barbless hooks, 25 pound mono, and no problem in the big salmon net.  Dream     About     It.                        :smt001

OK, I'm having a little trouble sleeping over some issues.  I am learning as I go here, so please bear with me...

I made a couple of mistakes in the past 36 hours based on my immediate reactions to a situation I've not deal with before.  I've got people requesting that I make special exceptions for them, and, while I really want to accomodate it, I really need to stick to the rules as announced and reinforced here for months now.  I will not be extending any entry or gear purchases to anyone who signs up late.

You needed to have your entry postmarked by 4/15/13.

Second issue, I announced that some Jackson Kayak Team members would get a sponsor's exemption, while some others wouldn't, but those who did pay the entry fee would be eligible for all but the grand prize.  I'm going with this:

- tournament director is not eligible to win prizes;
- all other paid entries postmarked by 4/15/13 are eligible for any prize;
- if a Jackson or Headwaters team member were to win the grand prize it would be up to that person to decline it if that feels right;
- late requests for gear will not be granted.

This is really hard for me to do because I'm going to have to hurt some feelings of people who I know and consider friends, as well as possibly irking some who I don't yet know and who I hope to be friends with.  People really need to understand my process here.  I get lots of comments about how busy I must be and what a challenge it must be to run an event like this mostly by myself.  I am really not THAT busy, and it's not a HUGE challenge to pull off what I plan.  The big challenge becomes figuring out how to either accomodate people who want me to change my process just for them (like signing up or wanting gear late...), or, if I choose not to accomodate such a request, the challenge becomes how do I tell someone "NO".

I'm going to practice right here:

Club member by PM, email, FB message, telephone...etc. - "Eric:  I know I didn't follow the rules as announced here for months, but will you make an exception for me?"

Eric - "Sorry, but I can't do that - what you're asking is not fair to those who signed up on time, and it's also not fair to me."

What some people do not seem to understand is that the reason I'm not too busy and overwhelmed with administering this event is that I follow a plan!  I stick to my process.  If someone wants to grab me AT the event and say, "come over here, do this..." I likely have to tell them "No - I can't change my process for you because it may get me off track!"  And that person needs to understand what I'm saying!  The same goes for BEFORE the event - I'm on a schedule, and I have a process.  If you want me to put your name on the roster (even just for gear) then you needed to get postmarked by 4/15/13.  I can definitely sense when someone doesn't  understand this - most people are like, "what's the big deal?" and thinking that I'm being uptight.  The reality of it is that those who try to have me accomodate special requests are really messing it up for all those who are counting on me to follow through with my plan.  I don't have a second list of people who can pay late or have me collect money from someone at the event.  The way I pull this off is to stick to my plan and have people follow rules.  If I veer away from that m.o. I'm risking the success of the entire event.  So, I'm asking everyone:

Do not ask me to alter my plan for you!

Thank you.   :smt001

For those of you that didn't make the deadline, I suggest you come up and fish and chill anyway. Sure, you won't get to enter the tournament, but I doubt that there is a single person here who entered just for a chance at one the great prizes Eric has gathered.

I had a GREAT time at GS5 and I didn't fish all weekend.

In Loving Memory of Mooch, Eelmaster, Shicken, and Cabeza De Martillo

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

you still have to follow the rules, having a vhf, pfd, pair up with somebody, don't consume  alcohol or anything else that  would turn you into an idiot,  etc.
what about attending the safety meeting and potluck?

I think many will back you on this Big E, I know I will.
It's not about the prizes anyway, heck I never accepted any of the prizes (other than the seat I owed my wife) that I won. Just show up and forget about the prizes and enjoy the best weekend of the year with a great group of people.

OK ..I have only been around for about a year and this will be my 1st NCKA tournament ...I am very excited and have been looking forward to it ,dreaming about 100# Halibuts for months now
Funny thing is I know nothing about Shelter cove ,, my sleeping arrangement's,,if I will be on a team,,who I ill partner up with ,,what I will eat ,,,etc..etc..etc...
The only fact I had was   SEND IN $ AND FORMS BY the 15th or I was not fishing in the tournament....

Eric-

I say no all the time, piss off half the people I come across on any given day due to the nature of my job,  and ref high school football in the HDNL so I know quite well how to be unpopular and take heat.

If you need a NO man, I'm your guy.  Just let me know who to say NO to.
