The Va Palo Alto wants to do a crabbing event out at the Pacifica Pier...

I know nada about crabbing... or even if this is a good location...  not sure if this will be a HOW event or just assisting the VA to whomever wants to just go and help out.

So just looking for interest and who can bring equipment and some "Skillzs..."

Thanks and post up with interest or ideas....

Date is still in the air....

gonna be near impossible on a weekend without help from the city of pacifica or police to cordone off a section.  the place is a zoo on weekends.  pacifica is better crabbing using snares than it is with traps and hoops - a big swell there will beat the **** out of your gear and sometimes get it pushed into the beams.

What about kayak crabbing "inside" the harbor at Half Moon Bay?  Better chance of catching dungies.. Super easy to catch rock crab.... Plus the can fish along the inside rockwall... Just a thought..

Btw: CSFC just had there VA crabbing trip last week too...

The pier at Pacifica can be rough most of the time, it's mostly elbow to elbow. Like Ben said the weekends can be hard to even find a spot. Snares are the best options, I have seen lots of folks lose traps there.

Count me in, but I am with Gwhiz on this one as far as HMB.  The one advantage to Pacifica is its close proxiemity to the VFW/American Legion Hall is a short distance away.  They have in the past support some of the VA events with salt water gear.  Let me know if you want me to reach out to them for support as well.

I tried that last year, didn't get squat.  However my theory still is that there are boats that dont count their catch until they get to the harbor and then drop overboard legals that they cant keep.  At least a couple of times I  was offered crab from a boats while I was paddling back in the harbor, and was greatful since I was short  :smt004

There is also an American Legion in HMB, its about 1/2 mile-ish from the old pier launch; and if we could get Chucke to talk to CCK, maybe we can get them also to help.

Dungeness Crabbing inside the harbor is challenging, but access to open water is not to far away if the weather is good. However, one of my friends son dropped a pot there right before the opener and had 12+ legals on a 2 hour soak....

Alot of beach area for surf launching with little or no swell...

Wow,,,

Strong support and ideas as usual...  Awesome, just what I was looking for...

looks like it's time to fire up Nor Cal HOW and shoot for HMB...  :smt004  was thinking of waiting till spring, but we'll take a chance on the weather...

My only big concern with HMB Harbor is it is salt... and it is a Big Area... we would need PB support and solid communication...  got to be safe...

I'm going to run this by the VA, see what they had in mind for numbers etc.. and then we will figure it out...

these things take time with permits etc.. so figure for January...

It would be great to get the VFW ( Kevin? ), Harbor Master, CC&K or HMB Kayaks involved, I can talk to Keith ...

but first let me find out what the VA has in mind and I'll get right back...

Thanks Again to everyone for making this program what it is....

It's you that makes Nor Cal HOW work....
