You know, I do recall seeing some people once catching some crab off a small dock on the far side of the parking lot once in HMB.  Wasn't very big though, but might be a good option for some!

Pier crabbing is not for me.    HMB crabbing has potential.

We need to be concerned with safety.  Inexperienced veterans in salt water needs more attention to detail than fresh water.  Pulling crab nets up on a kayak is too dangerous  for a neophyte.

If we are going to do this, we need to consider all safety options, i.e., wetsuits for veterans, side by side guides; NCKA HOW personnel ready and willing to go in the water at a moments notice to assist.   We considered doing this last year but bowed out as it was deemed too risky.

I'm all for this but only if risks are kept to a minimum.  Our veterans don't need any more trauma.

I think the inner harbor might actually have nicer weather than the pacifica pier in January, the pier is exposed to both wind and large swell which can make for a miserable day if you don't get a favorable weather window.

I think Raydon is on the right track in anticipating some of the needs.  If we just address all the gear needs early, give them a primer on self rescue and stick next to them it shouldn't be any worse than a day at the lake.

Plus...there's options for jetty fishing/crabbing if the guys aren't into yaks. And if its skunkville we can just buy crab off the commercial boats and have a crab lunch on the beach.

We can drop some traps by the beach early in the morning to increase our chance for the crab feast.

As for a spot to hold lunch, I would more than be happy to be the point man for communicating with the HMB American Legion if this is the way you want to go.  They are a short walk from Barbara's Chowder House.  They have a large parking area, and some of their members have boats as well.  Please let me know and I can lay the ground work.  I know those guys from when I worked Rural Health at the VA, I used to go down there once a month with the doc's to check out any Vet who needed services.

Another thing that we can do is set traps outside the harbor and either bring them in for the after party or have the Vets pull them inside the harbor (remove shorties and be under the limit while transporting them).

The pier isn't the ideal place to bring a lot of people and have a social gathering. Another option is Baker, but it's weather dependent.
