Cck's location in hmb would be a good spot if they were willing.
As far as vets pulling pots it's my opinion that an experienced kayaker in a tandem with one kayak in support would be the safest.
I agree with (stacking) the pots inside the harbor after they have spent some time on the good grounds.so that means a few people shuttling gear from outside to inside.

Just curious why not doran beach? It is a super-protected launch with lots of calm protected water to pull and set pots. They also have a great picnic area right there at the launch/beach with handicapped bathrooms. There is also a lot less boat traffic.

Howdy Everyone    :smt006

Great Support and Ideas as Usual,,  strong work...

I heard back from the VA and as usual, there seems to be a disconnect no matter how well one spells it out to them...

Their staff is worried about getting seasick....   :smt009 ( guess they had a bad trip on a boat just recently )  I think I finally got it clear to them that we go out individually in kayaks and that the staff would most likely not even be on the water... ya think they would know this by now...  no worries ... All Good...  :smt004   but,

As with the Holidays, half their staff is out this week so they still need to get together and decide what will work...

They just wanted to take a group and go crabbing off a pier... obviously from what you are all saying, their plan to hit Pacifica Pier would most likely not turn out that well...

We have put out to them an offer to take a small group out crabbing to HMB, or a larger event at Quarry Lakes...

we'll know more next week...

Hi Jack,  After what we went through with last year, it comes down to having to up our insurance by $2 Million for the Sonoma County Parks ( a real pain paper work wise, and having to bug the hell out of national HOW). Then last time we got 15' seas off the head, cancel... then as we tried to do it a second time, we, the Nor Cal HOW board just decided it was too risky as even this event at HMB may be too. Taking a newbie out on the salt in cold weather and pulling a trap. It is a tall order and could only take the strongest of walking wounded to do this. The last thing about Doran, which I love... is it's logistical distance from where they are coming from in Palo Alto.

I am hoping to start working with another wounded warrior agency up north soon, still trying to work some details...

Thanks All and keep ya posted     :smt006

There is little or no swell inside the harbor; and very little chance for anyone to get seasick. there is alot of room to paddle around inside; including along the breakwall (for rock crabs & rock fish), in between the sailboat moored in the north section of the harbor (for dungies and halis) and hopefully on a good day, those brave enough can poke there heads outside the harbor.

Understood...  I just found it kinda funny that is what they came back with...

Getting back to safety...  It sounds like there is a great deal of boat traffic in the harbor, does anyone think this could be a problem?

If we launched at the old pier, we wouldn't have to cross the boat lane to get to the crab spot.

As Scott and James mentioned: if we launch at the "Old Pier" (X near the beach) or by the "CCK/Yaht Club" (X near the yellow box) and stay north of the yellow dash line, we should not encounter any boat traffic.

The boater come from either the slips or the launch ramps; the boating lane in mark in red arrows.

And, there is a 5mph speed limit inside the harbor; which minimizes the wakes to mere ripples.

Lastly, (and I am giving up one of my secrets spots :smt010) there is EXCELLANT perch fishing underneath the Old Pier... the could hang out there while there pots soak a fish; and in view of the shore staff....

Thanks for the illustration, that clears it up and looks totally fine...

so, I'm thinking we do both, HMB and Quarry Lakes...  we'll set a date for the HMB gig, I'll get CC&K on board,

Kevin, does this spot work for you and the AL?

Then we'll also work on a Quarry Lakes event for late January/ early February...

  sound good?

Let me know what dates your are thinking about and I'll give Pillar Point Harbor Master a call to see what input the may have on our needs.

I'll be working most weekends for the next 3 months so weekdays works for me. I think a non-rainy day would be better. I know they are vets so rain doesn't bother them but it's not as fun IMO for us wussies.  :smt044

Weekday (M-Th) would be ideal; but like you said, not sure how much support we would get from NCKA members who work the traditional M-F jobs, including myself.

But given enough advance notice, I believe some could still make it; including myself. Drawback to advance planning would be the weather; hard to predict/anticipate it further than a week out.

I just got off the phone with PP Harbor Master, shouldn't be a problem weekdays; but weekends, when it gets busy, than can get short handed. However, there involve would be minimal, unless anything unforseen occurs.

The company i am working for has no problem giving me a day off for HOW. They are very supportive of what we do. I can make it on a weekday. The HMB plan looks pretty solid.
