Anybody have any insight into DFG's position on this??
If you were stopped by a DFG warden you would have been cited. No doubt in my mind.
How many stories have you heard about an honest mistake being made by someone concerning abalone ending up in a citation?
I've known people that did nothing wrong and still got a citation.
I bet if you cleaned the ab at at home and didn't post it you'de have no problems.

Yeah you're probably right....but I feel very strongly that I did nothing wrong so felt comfortable sharing the experience with you guys...

I'm gonna ask some DFG guys I know what they think as well...

On a side note...does anyone know if the cabs puke the shells back out after the meat is all digested or ??  I have seen empty ab shells by cabbie holes before so I am thinking they do have a way of getting them back up?

Predigested abs.....this could be like the monkey poop coffee beans that're supposed to be the bees knees.

Never heard of monkey poop coffee... you buying it out of the back of some van?   :smt005

You have a better source for grade a indo exports?

:)

BJ, legality and citations are a slippery slope.  Aside from being disgusting, I don't see any theoretical issues with eating the remains of your dead fish's digestive tract.

Practically, I agree with tote with one caveat.  Me and a couple others were parked on the side of the road south of Monterey.  He stopped and checked us for licenses.  One guy had an ab card in his license box and mr dfg decided to inform us that taking abs down there is not a citation like up north (even though we had zero intention of taking abs...kook).  It's an overnight stay in the county jail, possibly two if you get popped on a Saturday.

So Im thinking jail in lieu of citation :)

You're an ANIMAL bro!  I'm going to be checking fish stomachs from now on and hoping the fish I caught swallowed something good right before I hook them.   :smt044

Re: legality-

I don't think there is a DA anywhere that would take this in front of a jury. That doesn't mean that a warden won't cite you though. It sure looks like a technical violation.

The safest route would be to feel for stomach contents and if you suspect abs in the stomach, wait to filet the cab until you get home.

I'd bet they can digest them that small, their diet is mostly crustaceans, so they must have some powerful stomach acid already.

Sincerely,

They most certainly do puke the shells back up. In fact, the digestive enzymes and stomach juices seem to polish the shells by removing growth.

If you look back into a cab's throat, you'll see the sets of pharyngeal teeth. I think they use these for both aiding in swallowing large objects, and for gripping and pushing them back up. These teeth make a cool croaking sound when they grind together when you shoot a cab without stoning it.

On a related note, china rockfish also eat abalone. I've noticed small, empty shells around china lairs, so I think they regurgitate, too.

Jim... you're my "FEAR FACTOR" hero!!!
I personally will try just about anything like you.  I once ate a sturgeon's gizzard and noto cord on a dare, and I actually liked it.  Those sliced gut abs look tasty.

Damn Jim I have been known to eat off the fillet board but that is just hardcore. The thought did cross my mind although I would have cooked it. Lol.

The chinas eat abs for sure. One puked up a tiny ab in my lap north of SWS.

I have found a shell fragment in cabby that seemed to suggest that the shell was being digested. It looked like the mother of pearl was the only thing remaining and the rough outer part had been dissolved. I will take a pic of it if there is any interest. :smt001

I'm interested!

I have a collection of small pinto ab shells from cab bellies that my daughter loves....I also have a very tiny one that is almost all mother of pearl and will try and take some pics as well!

So here are the abs I have pulled from various cabbys and one china. The smallest one is from the china. The parially digested one is at the top right of the photo and a dime is shown for comparison. I call em cabby pearls myself.  :smt003
