My wife and I did the same thing last year in Salt Point. Caught a nice big cab with a perfect ab in its belly. The ab was in awesome shape and obviously super fresh.

We fried ours with butter and garlic over the campfire and it was very tender. I think the younger ones are naturally more tender.

I can't wait to find another "Cabalone".  :smt001

Sour cream and cottage cheese.   :smt009

Only two of the greatest most versatile foods on the planet.
Just thinking about some partially digested cottage cheese with hot sour cream drizzled on top, eaten finger scoop style...mmmmmmmmmmmmmm yummy!    :smt044

I think I have the answer to the question of legality.

I think with all of our takes from these great waters,  the law pertains to procession.  I'm quite sure that by now (after eating this crap) your body is no longer in procession of it.  Nasty, nasty boy!

That is awesome.

But I'd still be careful about the legalities of doing this.  Just image you get stopped at a DFG check.  What are you going to say that they believe?  Seriously, the laws are constructed to not allow loopholes like this.  How does a game warden determine an ab that was in a cabs gut vs. one that was illegally harvested.

Yeah I know....the shell looked like it had been in a gut but that is just my opinion....

 :smt012

Anybody have any insight into DFG's position on this??

If you were stopped by a DFG warden you would have been cited. No doubt in my mind.
How many stories have you heard about an honest mistake being made by someone concerning abalone ending up in a citation?
I've known people that did nothing wrong and still got a citation.
I bet if you cleaned the ab at at home and didn't post it you'de have no problems.
