Any one go squid fishing here? My friends over at the gulf of the farralones visitors center (@Crissy Fields SF)need whole squid carcases for their programs. They educate students about the marine environment and teach bout GW, Whales, Birds, And squids. They dissect the squids with the kids and do other things with the bodies so it will be well used. Let me know if you can help out Thanks!

I think they went back to their roots.  I don't think anyone's seen them for a while.

We are in a La Nina ocean event in california for the last 2.5 years. This seems to be keeping the Humbolt Squid in S Cal.

I'm with daveyboy....they've been pretty non-existent the last couple years.  I'm gonna try out of moss in the dead of winter, just for kicks and possible crab bait.  I'll pm you when I go.

The word is that we have an El Nino brewing, so maybe they will come back up here.
I kinda don't miss them though.

Unfortunately the Humbolt Squid are back at the edge on the Monterey canyon , The only good part is they make great crab bait.

Nobody has ever caught & landed one from a kayak, but it can definitely be done. I'm not stoopid enough to try but if someone wants to try, I have #s within paddling range outta Moss or Carmel.
Hey I just had an idea!!! Flylined humboldt squid for giant wsb lol...or maybe they'd swim down and grab a couple RF for you (like a pet squid that catches fish for you). !!!

If I hear of any friends gettin into them or planning squid trips, I'll send you a msg chumchum. Oh, and I always wondered is your username from the show Fanboy & Chumchum? That's one of my son's favorite shows haha!

I have heard they make good calamari steaks if cleaned right away.  Also besides crab bait it is another great bait for pacific halibut.

Yup, some of the Monterey charter boats have been hitting smaller 5-10 pounders.

Forget the crab bait, they taste Delicious the way I cook em.. Ive been keeping my eye out for em. I Criss cross slice but not all the way thru and soak in olive oil salt and pepper. Throw right on the oak wood BBQ! Wham! I cant wait to get some! :smt007...End of threadjack.

Glad to hear they are back. If you break them down right after you catch them and get them on ice they are ok eating. I pound them and fry them. The panga guys in Baja target them so doable from a kayak. Might bring a spear gun and shoot them in the head before bringing on board.
