First post!  I'm new to kayak fishing and have not even been out yet!  I live in the Santa Cruz area and my friend and I have been waiting for better conditions to head out locally.  Lots of wind lately, or at least when we were available to go out.  Now I'm thinking about Lexington Reservoir, which I'm only 20 minutes away from.  How's the fishing here lately?  All the reports I have found seem to be pretty old.  Any tips for a newbie on his maiden voyage?

Try your luck at Loch Lomand. Easy reservior to get used to the kayak on and they just put a load of trout in there last week. Welcome to a great website and a group of guys who have lost of knowledge and stories to tell. Welcome to the "madness!"  :smt003

Thanks!  I have shore fished with the kids at Loch Lomond but it was my understanding, at least a few years ago, that they did not allow any boats that are not stored at the lake to go in the water?  Or will they inspect my yak for the mussels (or is it clams?) and then let me go?  If I knew I could launch I'd definitely try there.  I'd still like to try for some crappie at Lexington having grown up on Anderson Lake and catching hundreds of those!

Welcome BD.

You are correct about Loch Lomond.  Only boats that are stored there can go in the lake.  I will be interested to see your report on Lex.  Get out there.  and, give us details.

Welcome aboard Barndoor! I don't know about Lex right now, but I'd love to get on some crappie @ Anderson some time. I fished Anderson and Coyote a lot growing up and caught some nice crappie from shore @ Anderson...but I haven't got one from my kayak there yet. Good luck at Lex!

alright, lets up that post count!  Truth be told I haven't fished much since the 80's.  Growing up on Anderson I fished for crappie all summer from the same spot and caught hundreds.  I seem to recall 50-75 a day.   Since then only fly fishing in the sierras mostly, and nowadays I'm lucky to get there once a year.  So when a friend offered a used necky spike, and another friend goes out kayaking for rock fish, ling, etc I jumped on it.  Of course I haven't actually been out yet but I hope this new endeavor ups my yearly fishing days.   I'll take any and all advice on good places to go that are close to Santa Cruz, and thanks for the warm welcome!

Barndoor -- I work in M.H. and considering fishing from the shore at Anderson during my lunch break.  Any suggestions of where to fish from?  There are a few spots with ok access near the bridge.  Any good?  Saw a guy walking up from there about a week or two ago with a stringer of small bass.  I'd like to find the crappie though.  Going up there soon to scope it out.

Well, my fishing report will be nearly....30 years old!  I've "heard" that the south end of the lake is good territory.  I used to fish right near the old Marina, which is in Holiday Lake Estates.  just south of the docks was a seemingly non-discript section of bank.  Somehow us kids figured out that there was a steep drop off a few feet out from shore and we could cast all day with a jig and a bobber and catch hundreds.  Of course I don't know what the lake level is like right now.  If you go PLEASE report back!  My parents still live up by Anderson and I could easily take the kids fishing there from the banks, or bring my yak....

At FW in SJ there are some nice pics of pretty good sized bass that are on the wall that were from Lexington.  I've not fished it in a long time either, but the bass should be on the bite!  Let us know the low down on parking, inspection, etc and how your fishing was, probably end up there a few times in the next couple months myself  :smt002

Report from anderson -- fished there during lunch for about 1/2 hour.  Water is down, and still falling based on the amount of wet ground hear the shoreline in the no-wake zone (sure some of it is from wind chop).  Beautiful and worm up there in the upper 80's to low 90's.  Water is warm.  Vis is about 1' and the water gas a moderate amount of green growth.  No fish to report.  Fished across the lake at the picnic area just over the bridge.  Good structure there, just no fish with the 1 lure and 1/2 hour I had with me!  Going to try again next week with a bobber and some good 'ol worms to see what we can round up.  I saw a guy fishing with a bobber and rubber worms about 2 weeks ago and had a stringer of bass.  Largest maybe 2#?  Hard to tell as I drove past him.  They were fishing down the steep bank right near the bridge (both sides).

Snake warning!  I did run across 1 live small rattler while down at the water edge today.  Be VERY careful if you bring kids pets up there!

I won't pass up catching a barn door sized hali but my screen name has a differnt meaning.  Beverage of choice on me for the first person who can tell me what a "barndoor" is, and it's not fishing or farm related.  Winner must take me fishing to collect!

Sorry, thanks for playing!  I'll still buy you a water if you take me fishing though.  Now that I think about it I like the barn door sized halibut analogy better.  maybe a forecast of things to come.....
