Cant find the size requirement online for nets used when landing a salmon.  Is it 24x24???

What net do you use and why?

Thanks!

Only size restriction is minimum 18" diameter when fishing in the ocean...regardless of what species you're pursuing. I just use a huge 24x27 net w/a shorter handle than most.

Go BIG.  And I like the long handle.  BIG.   :smt001

You don't want the nightly heartache of putting yourself to bed with 20-30 minutes of what-if's about not fitting a monster into your net.

here's what I use....

I also added a foam on the handle for floatation. Compact yet strong enough to handle a salmon.

I ordered the same one.  I think scallen (not the drink) has one too.

Love the promar collapsible's!  I use the smaller version of that one for everything and love it!  Was thinking about getting the larger one for the same reason.   :smt002

Good luck putting a 40lber in that lil net.  If you want the best get a Beckman big fish/salmon net.  It has a weighted sock.  http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Fishing-Tools/Landing-Nets-Seines%7C/pc/104793480/c/104720580/sc/104427180/Beckman-Big-Fish-Nets/700782.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffishing-fishing-tools-landing-nets-seines%2F_%2FN-1100393%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104427180%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104793480%253Bcat104720580&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104793480%3Bcat104720580%3Bcat104427180

It is a lil too big for the yak though I have used it once on my yak.  A 48" deep sock is ideal and 25"-28" x 30"-36" is what you should use.

Go small and your going to lose a big salmon.  You can always gaff em too as long as you know its a legal king.

Q: Whats the ideal net for salmon?

A: A gaff!

learn to unhook undersize fish WITHOUT netting them.

Thats why they are called "shakers".

A netted salmon, no matter what fancy net you have, is pretty much a dead salmon.

My big (old) net broke the other day, and luckily I had the fish in my lap before I realized the net was toast.  I bought a new Frabill today - 42" x 31" hoop.  $69.99 @ Pacific Outfitters in Eureka - 10% off for NCKA, so it was around $69 out the door after tax.  It's the biggest net I could get locally.  Looking forward to using it tomorrow.

Quite a few people have asked what net to get over the years here, and I always feel compelled to give this advice:  GO BIG!  if you don't feel like you have a chance of landing a big halibut, lingcod, salmon or striper then just go with medium.    :smt001

Here's a 42"+ Pacific Halibut in my old big net.

BIG   :smt006

One picture is worth 1000 words.  Thank god the fish aren't that big in Monterey County.  :smt001

I do have a gaff courtesy of EWB that may make an appearance.
