It's still a small price to pay for one of the best parties of the year!

Is the reserved area going to be subdivided, in case there are those who actually want to get some sleep the night before? I know, party pooper- but I get sleepy around midnight and a few beers...   :)
That's why I was considering getting a spot on the opposite end of the reserved area (for sleeping after the party).

Lol. I'll stop by walmart to get some plugs- cheaper than buying an rv- although hobie dave's storage locker on his yak trailer might fit me fine!

I'm going to enjoy my new RTM after catching a 40" ling, 48" halibut, 24" red, 18" greenling and 25.5" cabbie.

How many points is that if I release everything but the halibut?

40" ling released and no longer lingcod retained = 240 points
48" halibut retained                                        = 240 points
24" red released and no longer rockfish retained = 192 points
18" greenling released and no longer ones retained = 216 points
25.5" cab released and no longer cabs retained = 204.25 points

Looks like AbMan will score nicely at 1092.25, and I'll be sad to burst his bubble with all those species plus a 42" King Salmon sizzling on the 'cue at the potluck.   :smt003

Some other good scores:

15" perch - good for ZERO points but plenty of laughs when whoever tries to enter it realizes he or she did not read this year's rules!   :smt005
28" coho - your score = fifty lashes in front of the group and possibly a DFG-CalTip call!   :smt044

Be sure to read up on this year's new rules - that doc and the order form/registration are only attached on the first entry of this thread.   :smt001

PS:  I think I'll contact MyOutdoorBuddy for a little press...   :smt004

I am just curious on how you are going to regulate someone keeping your largest one? I hate to be a spoil sport but someone could easily release and photo a 36" ling and not measure a 40" ling keeping it. I know it is meant to be a gentlemen honor but not all are gentlemen. Just saying

I don't think it'll take much scrutiny to assure that we're getting honest entries.

Scenario:  JoeYakker brings his stringer and camera to the check-in.  Joe shows a nice 36" ling on the trough with the required photo element.  Joe scores (5 points x 36 inches = 180) 180 points plus the 36 bonus points for a total of 216.  If he's "smuggled" a 40" ling ashore and is hiding it from us then he could've scored 200 points and a whole lot of fanfare by just turning in the Lingzilla...  So maybe there'll be someone at Gimme Shelter 6th Annual Kayakfishing Tournament who chooses to gain a few points illegally while at the same time passing on what would be lots of positive attention from the 40 incher he caught.  Doesn't sound like anyone who will be participating to me.  Let's say he does "get away with it" and wins the tournament - I'm not too concerned about that happening.

More realistic scenario:  people realize as they catch bigger and bigger fish that carefully releasing those sought after targets is extremely rewarding both in terms of points scored and self esteem gained, and our group gets some well deserved PR for practicing conscientious fishing.

If it all goes awry then I'll hope to learn a lesson about what's really happening at Gimmer Shelter.  I admit though, that I type that tongue-in-cheek, because I already know that the spirit of our group in terms of fairness, competition, pride and honor is strong enough to pull this off.   :smt001

Eric,

So the C&R bonus can be obtained by releasing your biggest of that species right?

Just clarifying...so if Zilla and I run out to our secret Ling hole we found last year, I catch and photo and release a fat 40 incher (yeah right!   :smt002) and then pick up two 30 inchers that I keep for the potluck I would be all good and get the C&R bonus for my 40 inch fish?

Never hurts to dream right?

Just want to make sure I'm dreaming correctly!

Welcome, Pinseeker_11!  It's really a pleasure to receive an entry from someone new who hasn't been to the tournament and I've never met.  I exprience gratification for being part of the energy that attracts someone to the event and a sense of responsibility for showing another person what a good time we have at Gimme Shelter.  Looking forward to meeting you and thanks for the hoodie order!   :smt001

In that order is legit. But what about if I catch & retain two 30" lings then C&R a 40" ling...that wouldn't count right? Because once you've retained your limit, you technically can't target that species anymore (according to dfg). It's not really encouraging the spirit of the C&R Bonus, either. But then again...I'm probably way over-thinking this thing.

It's a good point you raise, Pat.  I think we leave that up to the individual.  If someone's kept two 30's and then catches a whopper 40 they should leave it in the water to release it since they know they can't keep it.  If someone slipped a trough under it and snapped a pic then we'll never know if that pic was before or after they'd kept a limit of smaller fish.  Let's let people navigate that ethical landscape on their own and hope they find opportunities for learning, growth and appreciation.

Everyone who participates at Gimme Shelter is, I feel, very likely to value the spirit of sportsmanship more than they value winning the tournament.  I may be wrong, but I will keep striving to make this a reality.  We can't be with every participant on their boat or with every team on the water, and I hope we would never have those as goals or concerns at an NCKA tournament.  We do espouse the values of individualism combined with sharing, hard fought battles linked with gentle handling of our target, and fierce competition always coupled with honor.

It's definitely intentional that I give Sportsman of the Day a nicer 10 inch ab than Angler of the Day receives.  :smt001

Eric, do you want to consider re-gifting the SOTD abalone shells. That would be cool . Like the Stanley cup. The same shell handed down year after year.
