I don't know a lot about dogs, or breeds, etc.  But keep thinking of getting a small dog that would be happy riding around in a kayak and enjoy the water.  No Yappers! (If there is one thing I cant stand are the yappy ones.)  I've met a few good small dogs (which changed my opinion of them entirely) and have seen a few of you with them on your yaks. So what do you guys think the best kayak fishing dog breed would be?

One that has no retriever or hunting abilities at all. I can't take my dog anywhere near where I am fishing. As soon as she sees a lure tossed out she is in the water after it. If I have a fish on she try's to go get it for me too.

Pug. They think they are human. Rarely bark, like to chill and could care less about birds. They usually hover around 20lbs. "A big dog in a small dogs body." Once you go pug, you will never look back. Not only are they rock stars from Mars, they are cute as a button. Ask Alfredo.

Boston Terriers are pretty rad dogs, good size with a good temperment...  but in my limited experience they get cold on the water easily.

I say Saint Bernard! have them in tow behind your Hobie, and we can fill that barrel on his collar with hot cocoa for all the cold shivering fisherman!

....ha ha, I know the feeling, but my guess is your next dog will be another retriever..

Labs are out of the question, mostly. We have two, they are getting old now but a few years ago it was impossible to keep buster out of the water.  Prada (she came with the name from Golden Gate Lab Rescue but we could have changed it anytime because she didn't come to her name for six months.  Too many times I would have to chase after her yelling Prada, Prada, Prada) mostly wanted to hang out.  I vote for a smaller yak dog.  Pulling a 70# flailing dog into your yak is a tipping hazard.   I'm liking the Pug, possible bikini magnet?

I'm with Mooch on the mini aussie a pug would freeze to death another good choice would be a Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever

Aussie for sure! they are smart and not too needy! Ive had pitbulls my whole life, and they are good dogs, but in my older adult life, I find that they need my attention a little TOO much.  Just MHO!

My dog was actually bred for pig hunting. Catahoula, also known as a Louisiana Spotted Leopard dog. Louisiana state dog. Mines a mixed breed, but has the characteristics of the catahoula.

You should buy a hawk instead. They're way better at fishing. And he could just ride on the bow like a badass hood ornament!
