Our Beagle doesn't like the water but loves the yaks :smt003 He likes to cross from one yak to another OTW :smt044 When he does fall in, he just waits to be lifted back in... Total Bikini magnet too... (although a pug would be a great yak dog) My vote would have to be a pug...
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

I don't know a lot about dogs, or breeds, etc.  But keep thinking of getting a small dog that would be happy riding around in a kayak and enjoy the water.  No Yappers! (If there is one thing I cant stand are the yappy ones.)  I've met a few good small dogs (which changed my opinion of them entirely) and have seen a few of you with them on your yaks. So what do you guys think the best kayak fishing dog breed would be?

I know you paddle a Malibu Kayaks X-Factor so you have plenty of capacity to take a larger dog if you wanted to and the larger ones are less likely to yap a lot.  Consider popping open the front hatch, padding the inside of the hull, and putting your large or small dog in there.  Since your boat is designed to have a child jump seat, it should work out better than most other kayaks.  You could of course put your dog in the rear well, but dogs love to be the captain of the ship and command from the bow  :smt001

The best dog... is the mellow one whatever breed that is... I have had Aussies for 25 + years and although they are smart (too smart at times), unless you like dog hair in everything you eat and have more energy than then the dog...you are screwed  :smt044. They need lots of exercise and have three types of hair that shed all year and in clumps in the spring and summer. We actually started to shave ours in the summer, except the mini as he already looks like a girl. :smt044. I used to sail in a small boat with a McNab about 25 years ago and she would settle down; however, was too smart and knew when to be afraid...  :smt001 The smart breds can really read you like a book :smt001

It all depends on the dog, my dog doesn't really yap, he is a Chi/terrier mix (mutt). He usually just goes to sleep when in the kayak. He has yet to jump off but he always wears his PFD.

Pug. They think they are human. Rarely bark, like to chill and could care less about birds. They usually hover around 20lbs. "A big dog in a small dogs body." Once you go pug, you will never look back. Not only are they rock stars from Mars, they are cute as a button. Ask Alfredo.

Yep, Pugs rock.

Actually, our little Sammy hasn't been on the water. I meant to take him out this summer but never got around to it.
He enjoys bike rides and he has a magnetic personality. Who can resist those big googly eyes?

You should buy a hawk instead. They're way better at fishing. And he could just ride on the bow like a badass hood ornament!

+1
there was a groupon last week for falconry lessons in SF  :)
they catch theyre own food
light weight
no barking
rare and individualistic
shows you've got "panache"
could be trained to locate schooling baitfish, hover above until youyi get there and ride with you eating a snack (rat) while you sifh the bait ball
is very much more macho than the viet. fishing cormorants

;)

I've owned 5 pugs over the last 40 years , great little dogs - if you can stand their snoring . Not very good water dogs , never seen one that does not swim like a rock , need a good life vest . Daughter brought me home a Jack Russell X ,  little bit of beagle , JRT are my new favorite breed . Smart as any , very protective - this little dog wanted to take on a bear , good thing she was under my control . Very entertaining - keeps a vermin at bay in camp . Have not have mine in the kayak yet sure she would do well as she minds well and is an olympic swimmer and loves my boat and water .

Any dog can be trained to be a yak dog if you start as a puppy. Ideally, get a puppy under 4 months of age. Smaller dogs are easier on the yak but bark more. Border collies are real smart as are poodles. I have been happy with my golden retriever but she weighs about 55 pounds. Get a species which is good with kids.

Thanks Sharky, thats definetly what I was thinking as well. All of my animals were rescues, in one way or another.  But wanted to have a good idea of what I wanted so I can go to the shelter and discuss what kinds of dogs they have on hand.

I think the JRT are really cool dogs, so smart and active in a nice small package.  And i've also thought a lot about pugs, being that they always make me laugh and seem to have a humours view on life.  And I like the look of John's mutt too ;)  I'd always thought of having a lab, or goldent rt, since they seem to be missing that part of the brain that tells them life is hard  :smt002  but they are a little big for the kayak.

Keep your suggestions coming!  I'll be starting to look at the local shelters in the next week or so  :smt003
