Glad to finally have made it to the Steve Moyer Memorial! Got to meet Matt Moyer and thanked him personally for supporting a fellow Kayak Fisherman from the North. Was looking forward to seeing Jim Sammons again but he was out of town.

From Paul Lebowitz:

Quote
A total of 103 anglers registered for this ninth annual benefit for the American Cancer Society. Although attendance was down, Moyer said the crowd equaled last year’s fund raising total. Over its history, generous kayak anglers have raised over $100,000 to fight the vicious disease.

Anyway, the Nor Cal contingent (Rockhopper, Guitarzan, Chucke and myself) were unable to come up with a decent catch. Chuck somehow managed to get a Vermilion....I caught 3 sand dabs and got spooled by some thing very big but never got to see what it was (I was fly lining an 11-inch green back).....Ben hooked on to a 7 foot thresher but no pics were taken so it never happened  :smt002.

Here are some pics....

Wanna thank Chucke and his Mom and Dad for letting us chill in their BEAUTIFUL house up in the hills of Escondido. Chuck treated us to his world famous Ceviche and marinated Korean Beef over rice!!!

Must have been a bigun to spool you like that

I've been "nearly" spooled before but this "thing" that spooled me was very different. Once it hit, it just kept going at a very steady pace and it took about 15 seconds to empty my 40# braided line all the way to the knot tied to the spool. I never got to lift the rod off the flush mount rod holder cause I was trying to catch another green back (small hook with a fly lined small strip of squid) with my other rod and by the time I reeled up, the rod with the fly lined greenback  had an empty spool. Then, my 40# flourocarbon top shot simply "popped". I then reeled in all of my line back and my leader was cut clean. I was in disbelief as to what had just happened and I was convinced that I hooked into a submarine....well, that's what it felt like. This thing that was hooked took off in a very straight line (no pause or even any hint of head shakes) and at a consistent line angle. I looked into this link and found out that I was fishing in between the La Jolla Canyon and the Scripps Canyon.  (by the way, I was fishing blind - my Fish finder battery connections were corroded)

I did fish but didn't stay out very long. I decided to head in early and do some "people watching" by the shore line....

Mooch, could it have been a barracuda or a thresher? There was a small thresher caught there last week, as well as reports of possible cudas.

When I was there last week and coming back in, it's amazing how many people, many of them women, want to check out the fishing yaks, especially if u have a YT in the tankwell.

I wanna make that trip with u guys next year.

I had a great time. Mad props to Chuck and fanily for rescuing us from the wonderful world of Campland by the Bay.

I just realised that I didn't take one single picture the whole trip. Only time I took out my camera was to get foootage of the porpoises, but by then they were too far.

Word on the street was that this was more than likely the last SMMT. I hope not. If so, then I'll plan a La Jolla FnC next year.

Oh Man Im jealous you guys got to fish it. Did they hand out sardines again? Albion had more anglers? Im in shock. I donated a brand new Shimano Trynos. Anybody see it given away? The water and wildlife look equally bitchin. :smt007 Nice view from the parents pad Chuck!
