Scott,
 Since you can probably give out some hints as to how to fish this place not being worried about winning , what is a good game plan. I haven't fished here before and not sure what tackle I am bringing. Is there structure close by or is this goign to be fished by drifting live bait. Any good helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. Plan on rolling in on Friday afternoon. Is anyone pre-fishing on Friday? See you down there

Jimbo:

There are kelp beds and reefs, as well as flat sandy areas.  And broad stretches of sand interspersed with outcrops of shale.  It gets deep quick and a good number of salmon were in the area just two weeks a ago, over by the bell buoy outside of the Aquarium or Lover's Point.

REgular medium gear , all around stuff is best.  I usually use my Calstar 196 with a Penn 500 or Newell 220, 25 lb line.  I also use a light mooch type rod with an Ambassadeur strung with 17 lb for throwing lures.

Lings, halibut, rockfish......Maybe salmon (make sure you're using barbless and circle hooks for drifting).

Long shot is WSB, but they are there.  I always bring a bunch of squid, and try to jig up sardines or anchovies.  Swimbaits and megabaits also produce.  It's a good fishing spot.

try to pal-up with someone who has been out there before.

Good Luck!

Allen

Allen,

If we are registered, is there a need to check in the morning of?  In other words, can we launch early?

Ben I know you were giving me a rash of ***@  :smt044. I get going with my smack talk and do end up pissing people off when I don't mean to. I was just trying to make it clear that it's all in fun  :smt001 The truth be told I did go by MBK moss landing on my way home but was told if I didn't do good in this derby, they were taking the one I won last year back  :smt044 Got to love those guys!!! It won't be the same without Aaron there but there is always a laugh to be shared when I go in there. They are getting good at smack talking me right back out the door  :smt044 I am really looking forward to FINALLY getting out to fish. I'm sure my back will hold out for a hour or two (that may be all I need) :smt044 :smt044

OK, got the clearance for camping. Can I crash in someones spot (I'll gladly pay!), or should I get my own at Vets?

Jimbo -

I would target the species in the following order:

#1 Halibut
#2 Ling
#3 Salmon

There are 2 different areas that people will target:

#1 Coast Guard Jetty - Lovers Point
#2 Yellow Can - Beach Hotel

The fleet has been north of the beach hotel north to Marina. Probably out of range for this tourney. If you head towards Pinos, make sure you have the SMR boundaries on your GPS. Due to the time constraints and distance you will not have time to fish both locations unless you have a sail Hobie. Here are the tides for Saturday:
High   5:03 AM
Low   9:51 AM
High   4:41 PM

If you fish the incoming tide for halis, make sure are in range to make the weigh in at noon. Don't waste too much time trying to make bait. Bring frozen squid and some bait fish. If you are down there on Friday, go to the end of the old warf and see if they are selling any fresh squirts. They are cheap and great for halis and WSB. My plan is to hang out with Etienne and fish swimbaits and custom lures since dragging bait isn't my thing and I am not competing.

If you head towards Pinos, make sure you have the SMR boundaries on your GPS.

Lovers Point SMR is located off the coast of the Monterey Peninsula, at the southern end of Monterey Bay. It covers an area of.30 sq. miles. The reserve is directly offshore from Lovers Point Park, a small local park.

Lovers Point SMR is one of four marine protected areas bordering the Monterey Peninsula. It is between Edward F. Ricketts State Marine Conservation Area and Pacific Grove Marine Gardens State Marine Conservation Area. Farther to the west is Asilomar State Marine Reserve. All four areas are included within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

This marine protected area is bounded by the mean high tide line, and straight lines connecting the following points in the order listed [3]:

36° 37.10’ N. lat. 121° 54.09’ W. long.;

36° 37.25’ N. lat. 121° 53.78’ W. long.;

36° 37.38’ N. lat. 121° 53.85’ W. long.;

36° 37.60’ N. lat. 121° 54.75’ W. long.; and

36° 37.60’ N. lat. 121° 54.91’ W. long.
