One thing I was glad I had last year was a burlap bag to throw the fish in. If the sun is out, all you have to do is dunk it in the water once and a while to keep them cool.  Otherwise, they get get hot, discolored and probably not so good to eat.  -Gabe

Well im going to bring my crab trap anyway dfg reports They got  caught there last year in the general area but maybee the reason for small numbers is no one fishes for them down there too far a pb run, anyway here is the reported comercial numbers fro morro bay last year
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/dc_catchbyseasonandregion.pdf

Looking foreward to this weekend should be a good distraction from the everyday life.
Did anyone figure out what size diamond to bring and weather there are any halibut there or not
Also has everyone read the previous posts about the unkindly ranger I read them and hopefully will find them usefull.

The prediction is 10-20 KT winds on Sat. with swells 6'-8' and 10-20 KT winds Sun. with swells 7'-9'.   What do those in the know say?

The swell will be kind of lumpy, but the wind shouldn't be a big deal.  Bring a sea anchor and you can fish fine in 20kt wind (though you will get wet).  Since the mountains rise up so quickly at this spot, I can't really see a wind from the west being all that bad near the shore.

Launching could be difficult, mill creek has some boulders that could ruin your day if you got rolled onto one.  May have to fall back to limekiln if mill creek is washed out.

You guys also watch for the forecast south swell.  They are saying 4 feet for saturday. doesn't sound like much
but  3 foot south swell, long period (20 seconds) will have 12+ foot wave faces
at a place like fullers which is just 300 yards south of nepenthe, the restaurant (you can see it if you peer over the cliff it's a
500 foot climb down through poison oak, I have done that one). I have been told there
have been days it's telephone pole sized in the summer there. The big wave surfers from SF often
head there for big summer swells.

The deep water offshore allows the swells to come in hard from the south.  They rear up good and break hard.

watch for at least 20 minutes. If you see a big set of waves come in that time, make sure you launch right _after_
a set and don't dawdle. generally the sets on south swells are separated by 15 to 20 minutes.

once you are out on the water the long period south swell will be hardly noticeable.

knock 'em dead!

Oh, it's supposed to be foggy, so bring GPS and compasses everyone!

I went last time without GPS and had a nice tour of the coast before I found my landing again...

10-20 kt winds, 7-9 ft swells... OUCH!!! Here's my 2 cents worth... Good Luck... Make sure you guys have a plan B ready. I thought I saw that the swells would be coming from two directions possibly. That would make it choppy as hell out there. The winds don't help either. I could be wrong though... and the buoy reports can be crap also. Just be prepared and be careful. Watch the launch for a while before you head out. The fish aren't going anywhere. If you aren't that experienced... take Mooch's advice... wear a helmet, a wetsuit, whatever else you can throw on for protection and stow your gear... unless you want a cracked noggin and to have a yard sale on the beach. Maybe somebody can pick up some killer deals.

Have fun out there...

Freddie

Yeah.  I just remembered the time my dad wiped out at mill creek.  All the kelp churning in the surf tangled around the gear and broke one of my leashes - taking an uglystick tiger to davey jones locker.  There can be a lot of kelp on that beach depending on the tide.

High tide in the am should mean alot of junk in the surf.

Last time out, the commercial fishermen had tied a rope to the rocks at the back of the beach and thrown the other end out into the surf.  It tangled with such a huge quantity of kelp that it looked like the rope might break.  That was neat, but didn't save my rod...

Keep an eye out for abalone shells on the beaches too.  Murderous vermin refresh the empty shells regularly.  I found a 6" black abalone shell, and another guy found a couple of nice green abalone shells.  They're legal to take as long as they don't have an abalone inside them anymore.

I guess I'll take my surf and perch poles, as back up. Going to be a great weekend regardless of the surf.   My Road Warrior days are long gone. The big fish will still be there..

10-20 knts is a lot of wind, be careful.  i saw a live rockfish commercial guy in a 10ft skiff nailing gopher rockfish in the kelp right off the beach.  so if you end up hiding close to shore, tip a small jig with squid and you can catch those all day.  not much meat on them, but they do wiggle!

I don't want to rain on the Eric's weekend parade..... but just as Promethean, Freddie, Mooch and other experience guys have already said..... beware, especially at Mill Creek.  The portage over the boulders is sketchy.  One slip your and weekend trip could over.  Secondly, the beach is steep causing waves to brake at the last second.  I got rolled there last year.  There are a few small boulders hidden on the beach too which can break stuff.  My yak took a few battle scars and Yakuza busted a rudder.

For Big Sur newbies, I would recommend going to Limekiln first.  Be safe, not sorry!
